VERBS
There are two kinds of verbs:
• Finite
• Non-finite
But the difference between them are being explained below

4
Finite Verbs

༝ Finite means “bound”. Finite verbs

must have the same with the
number and person of it’s subject.
Finite verb show tense,person,and
number.

5
Example
༝ I like ice cream ༝ Nancy likes ice cream
I ( first person singular) Nancy ( third person,
Because the subject is singular)
the first person Because the subject is
singular, the verb must the third person
have the same and use singular, the verb must
invinitive without -s/-es have the same and use
invinitive with -s/-es

6

In the finite verbs,if the tense of the sentence
changes, the form of the verbs also changes. It is
bound by the tense of a sentence.
Example :
༝ She walks around the park (using simple
present tense)
༝ She walked around the park (using simple
past tense)

7
Non-finite Verbs

Non-finite verbs aren’t bound by

tense,person,or number of the subject.
Example :
༝ Samuel hates swimming (hates:finite
verb; swimming:non-finite)
༝ My friend hated swimming (hated:finite
verb;swimming:non-finite)

8
9
Let’s read some more example
༝ Nick plays basketball (finite verb)
༝ Crying will not get you anywhere (gerund)
༝ The graduate student tried to complete her
thesis (invinitive)
༝ The dancing parrot entertained the crowd
(present participle)
༝ Having finished his work,Harry was ready
to play (perfect participle)
༝ A broken heart will mend over time (past
participle)
10
CLAUSES

Clauses have two main types:

• Tensed (Finite)
• Tenseless/infinitival (Non-finite)

11
Finite Clause
Finite clause must contain a verb
which shows tense. They can be main
clauses or subordinate clauses.
Example :
༝ I wrote a letter last night (past)
༝ Is it rainning ? (present)
༝ I said that Jennie signed my book
12
Non-finite Clause
Non-finite clauses contain a verb which does not show
tense. We usually use non-finite verbs only in subordinate
clauses. We usually understand the time referred to from
the context of the main clause. We often use a non-finite
clause when the subject is the same as the subject in the
main clause:
༝ I had something to eat before leaving.
༝ After having spent six hours at the hospital, they
eventually came home.
༝ Helped by local volunteers, staff at the museum have
spent many years sorting and cataloguing more than
100,000 photographs.
༝ He left the party and went home, not having anyone to
talk to.
13
We often use non-finite clauses after some
subordinating conjunctions like after, although,
though and if:
༝ By the end of the day, although exhausted,
Mark did not feel quite as tired as he had in the
past. (although he was exhausted)
༝ The proposal, if accepted by Parliament, will
mean fundamental changes to the education
system.
We use non-finite clauses as the complements to
verbs which take -ing or to-infinitive after them:
༝ I don’t enjoy playing tennis in the rain.
༝ I’d hate to travel to London every day.

SlidesCarnival icons are editable shapes.

This means that you can:

● Resize them without losing quality.
● Change fill color and opacity.

Isn’t that nice? :)

Examples:

😉
Now you can use any emoji as an icon!
And of course it resizes without losing quality and you can change the color.
