Describe the standard of water

quality in Malaysia

Name the law and regulations

related in WWM
Wastewater/ Sewage water
is known as the quantities of water used by the
human population, which is usually a combination
of domestic, industrial, commercial, institution,
hospital and storm water or other run-off that
make it polluted water. It contains both dissolved
and solid contaminants. It is generally collected in
sewers that all together compose the sewage
system.
Domestic wastewater
(from homes) includes toilet waste and water
used for laundry, bathing, and dishwashing

Industrial wastewater
from places like factories, restaurants,
stores, schools, and hospitals, is called ICI
(industrial, commercial, institutional) flow.
Treated wastewater
wastewater that has been processed through a
wastewater treatment plant up to certain standards
in order to reduce its pollution or health hazard; if
this is not fulfilled; the wastewater is considered at
best as partially treated.

Reclaimed wastewater
treated wastewater that can officially be used
under controlled conditions for beneficial
purposes such as irrigation
 Sewage is conveyed in pipes known as sewers
from its place of production to its place of
treatment and disposal.
 The sewers are usually in network of underground
conduits. They are either of the separate or
combined system
 Pattern of sewer network

treatment works
 Reduce organic content
(reduction of BOD)

 Removal/reduction of nutrients
(i.e., N,P)

 Removal/inactivation of pathogenic
microbes
 Reduce the turbidity level
(reduction of suspended solids /sediment
The major categories of treatment steps:

 Preliminary treatment:
this removes materials that could damage plant equipment
or would occupy treatment capacity without being treated.
 Primary treatment:
this removes settleable and floatable solids
 Secondary treatment:
this removes BOD, dissolved and colloidal suspended organic
matter by biological action.
 Advanced wastewater treatment:
this uses physical, chemical and biological processes to
remove additional BOD, Solids and nutrients.
 Disinfection:
this removes microorganisms to eliminate or reduce the
possibility of disease when the flow is discharged
 Sludge treatment:
this stabilizes the solids removed from wastewater during
treatment, inactivates pathogenic organisms and reduces
the volume of the sludge.
•Water Quality
is a phrase to describe the physical, chemical &
biological characteristics of water.

•Environmental Quality Act, 1974

The legislation that is related to the prevention,
abatement, control of pollution and enhancement of
the environment in Malaysia .

•Industries discharging sewage, industrial effluent

and leachate are required to comply with the
following relevant discharge limits as stipulated in
their respective regulations:-
(a) Sewage discharge standards.(Appendix 1)
(b) Industrial effluent discharge limits. (Appendix 2)
(c) Leachate discharge standards (Appendix 3)
National Drinking Water Quality Standards
