CELL AS A UNIT OF LIFE

Chapter 2

R.S
WHAT IS A CELL?

• The basic unit of all living things.

• All organisms are made up of one or more cells.
• Unicellular organisms – made up of only one cell
• Multicellular organisms – made up of many cells
• Cells perform living processes such as respiration, growth, reproduction and
etc.

UNICELLULAR ORGANISMS

• Unicellular organism – organisms that are made of only one cell

• Uni – one
• Also known as microorganisms
MULTICELLULAR ORGANISMS

• Multicellular organism – organisms that are made up of more then one cell
• Multi – many
CELL ORGANISATION IN THE
HUMAN BODY

• Human beings are one of the most complex multicellular

organisms
• In the human body, different jobs and functions are carried out
by different types of cells.
• This is known as cell specialisation

• Several examples of types of cells are :

o Nerve cell
o Red blood cell
o Bone cell
o Epithelium cell
CELL ORGANISATION IN THE
HUMAN BODY

• Cells do not function individually

• They are organised into groups to perform important functions

• A group of cells performing a specific function is called a tissue

• There are 4 main groups of tissues.

CELL ORGANISATION IN THE
HUMAN BODY
• A group of different tissues that work together to perform a particular
function is called an organ
• Example : Lungs are the respiratory organs
• They consist of epithelial tissues, connective tissues, muscle tissues,
nerve tissues
CELL ORGANISATION IN THE
HUMAN BODY

• Several organs linked together to perform a particular

function is known as a system.
• Example : the human digestive system
o Consists of organs such as the mouth, stomach, small
intestine, large intestine and pancreas
HUMAN BEINGS ARE COMPLEX
ORGANISMS

• The human body is a complex organism

• Human beings have the ability to think and reason
• The process by which each type is specialised to
perform a specific function is known as division of
labour
• All organs and systems are equally important for the
body to function well.
