Coriolis Density Meters
Micro Motion Coriolis Sensors
Density Performance
 MMI coriolis meters only measure densities of
liquids and slurries… not gas
 Density accuracy of sensor is often dependent
on the sensor/transmitter combination
 Dependent on :
– Sensitivity to changes in tube frequency relative to
changes in density
• Increasing tube wall thickness – deceases density accuracy
High pressure vs. std. pressure sensors
– Precision of calibration performed and ability of
transmitter to resolve signal
Micro Motion Coriolis Sensors
Density Specifications
 Accuracy expressed as: + g/cc value
– ELITE
• All sensors (except high press) = + 0.0005 g/cc (+ 0.5 kg/m3)
• CMF010P (High Pressure) = + 0.0020 g/cc (+ 2.0 kg/m3)

 What does the density spec. mean ?

– An ELITE sensor indicating a density reading of
1.0505 g/cc may actually have a fluid passing through
the senor with a density range of:
• 1.0510 g/cc to 1.0500, a spread of 0.0010 g/cc

Power and Temperature
Specifications
Micro Motion Coriolis Meters
Power Consumption
 All Elite meters with core processors
– 3 Watts

 Power is supplied by the transmitter or with MVD

Solo, the power is supplied to the core processor.

 Common Question : Is the meter loop powered ?

- No.
Temperature Specifications
Temperature Accuracy :
 Refers to the ability of the sensor to continuously
read the process fluid temperature from the RTD
attached to the sensor.
 Accuracy Statement :
+ 1oC + 0.5% of reading in oC
Repeatability :
+ 2oC (all models)
Temperature Specifications
 Why does Coriolis need to measure
temperature ?
 Isn’t mass flow rate independent of
temperature ?
 RTD measures tube wall temperature
 Young’s Modulus of Elasticity
 Other Uses
– Enhanced Density
– Petroleum Measurement
Temperature Specifications
Process Fluid Limits :
 Defines the operating temperature limits of
the sensor and its components to withstand
continuous exposure to the heat/cold radiated
by the process fluid(s) being measured by the
sensor
– Limiting components are coils, wiring, RTD, wire
feed-through, J-box terminals, location of core
processor and other electronic components on
the sensor
Temperature Specifications
Ambient Limits
 These are specifications provide the temperature range
the area in which the sensor will be installed must be
maintained in order to meet the electrical approvals
required by the customer

 For example, in order for an Elite sensor to meet UL

approval, the sensor can not be exposed to temperatures
beyond –40oF to 104oF (w/either a core processor or J-
box)

 Ambient temperature and fluid temperatures limit each

other for integral core processors
Temp. Limits for Elite Sensor
Practice Questions
 If the customer wants to use a CMF025 with an
integral (not extended) core processor on a liquid
with a temperature of 125°C, what is the
maximum ambient temperature it can withstand ?

 If the customer needs to operate at higher

ambient temperatures, what are their options ?
Pressure
Specifications
Micro Motion Coriolis Meters
Pressure Ratings
Flow Tube Rating
Represents the maximum sustained operating pressure that
the sensor tubing can be exposed to from the process
fluid
 Ratings are based on materials of construction and tube
wall thickness
 Tube rating must be > maximum process pressure
– Large safety factor employed in design per ASME codes
 ELITE Sensor Examples:
– 316L and 304L stainless steel 1500 psi
– Nickel-alloy (Hastelloy) 2755 psi
– High-pressure CMF010P 6000 psi
Pressure Ratings
Housing Rating
 The pressure rating of any std. or optional secondary
containment of the sensor. Customers purchase
secondary containment when there is concern about
safety should there be a tube failure
 There are two numbers shown for secondary containment
– Containment per ASME B31.3
• CMF050 1421 psi
– Burst Pressure per ASME B31.3 (point of failure)
• CMF050 5286 psi

 Other Options/Techniques :
– Purge Fittings
– Rupture Disks
Pressure De-rating
 Above certain temperatures, the pressure rating
of a sensor (case and housing) decreases.

 For example, all Elite sensors are derated by

7.2% for 316L SS flow tubes at 400°F and by
5.4% for housing

 Calculate the pressure rating for flow tubes and

housing of a CMF050M at 400°F.

 Pressure Effect
– Very Predictable
– Can Compensate

8800DD Dual Vortex
Safety Integrated Systems (SIS)
Designed for Safety
• Redundant Flow Signals
• Two (2) Complete Vortex Meters : Sensor, Electronics and Shedder
Bar
- 10” and 12” Dual Style Vortex Meters uses Single Shedder Bar
Rosemount 8800D MultiVariable
(T-Comp) Vortex Meter
 Temperature sensor added to 8800D as
option
 Allows vortex to measure both flow and
temperature
 Provide a temperature compensated
mass flow for saturated steam
 Great for saturated steam applications
– Increased accuracy by calculating density
from actual process temperature
– Reduces cost of installing vortex and
temperature separately
– Provides excellent rangeability
Rosemount 8800D MultiVariable (MV)
Vortex Meter Design
 Electronics
– Processes two signals – vortex shedding for flow,
temperature for density
– Calculates and outputs temperature compensated
mass flow for saturated steam
– Can output two simultaneous variables (4-20 and
Pulse): Flow, Steam Mass flow, Temperature
 Temperature Sensor
– Type N thermocouple
– Isolated from process like vortex sensor
– uses shedder bar as thermowell
– 2-wire, Conserves power for future enhancements
 The only MV Vortex with temperature and
vortex sensor that can be replaced
independently and without exposing user to
process fluid
Rosemount 8800D MV Vortex Meter
- Why Type-N Thermocouple ?

 Why a Thermocouple ?
– 1/8” diameter temperature sensor is required to use shedder bar
as thermowell
– Thermocouples have been shown to have better performance
and reliability in small diameters.
– This is not true for larger diameters (¼” diameter) where RTDs
will be more accurate

 Why Type N ?
– Type-N special limits gets us the same level of accuracy as small
diameter RTD with less drift
• Type N is ni-cor
• Not a base-metal thermocouple (Type J or K), which makes it less
susceptible to drift.
