Project Scope Management

WHAT IS SCOPE?

• Scope
• involves getting information required to start a project,
• The features the product would have
• would meet its stakeholders requirements.

• Scope refers
• to all the work involved in creating the products of the project
• and the processes used to create them.
• It defines what is or is not to be done
SCOPE MANAGEMENT

• In project management, the term scope has two distinct


uses;

• Project Scope

• Product Scope
PROJECT SCOPE
• Project Scope
• The work that needs to be accomplished to deliver a
product, service, or result with the specified features
and functions”.
• The Project scope are the activities and
deliverables that need to be performed/delivered
during the project life cycle.
• For example, customer training during the
execution of project, could be part of the project
scope but is definitely not part of the product
scope.
PRODUCT SCOPE
• Product Scope
• The features and functions that characterize a product,
service, or result."
• Product scope is what the product should or should not be,
or do, once completed.
• For example the scope of a new coffee machine to be
manufactured could be to make not only espresso coffee
but also hot water for tea.

Notice that Project Scope is


more work-oriented, (the
hows), while Product Scope is
more oriented toward
functional requirements. (the
whats).

• In terms of project evaluation,

the product scope is to be


measured against the product
requirements, while the project
scope should be measured
against the project plan.
WHY TO PREPARE SCOPE STATEMENT?

•To clearly document the rationale, baseline, Project Goals,


Deliverables and requirements
•If changes are proposed at a later stage in any project
phase, they could be compared with the original Scope
statement
•Scope Statement establishes a common understanding
among stakeholders, team members regarding project
scope, objectives, targets, implementation arrangement,
policy, monitoring, resource requirements and deliverables

• Initiation Project:
• beginning a project or continuing to the next
phase

• Scope planning:
• developing documents to provide the basis for
future project decisions, how the WBS will be
created and defined

• Scope definition:
• developing a detailed project scope statement as
the basis for future project decisions
