Why Micro Turbine Generators?
 Due to increasing energy demand, Associated costs are also
increasing.
 Distributed generation has become an alternative method.
 Micro turbine Generator’s are one kind of DG source.
 They RES utilization and are more efficient in utilization of
CHP applications and lower’s the emission.
 Designed to operate for extended periods of time.
 Less number of reciprocating parts, No need of lubricators.
 Deployed art of Lean-burn combustion technology.
What are MTG’s?
 Small, high speed power plants.
 They are also known as Turbo-alternators or Gensets.
 The main components are turbine, compressors, recuperator,
combustor and generator.
 Following are the types of MTG’s:
i) Un-recuperated MTG
ii) Recuperated MTG
How it operates:

Fig.1 The working of MTG

Tests undergone by MTG:
 MTG’s undergoes number of performance and maintenance
tests.
i) Endurance test
ii) Noise measurement test
iii) Emission measurement test
iv) Peak load gross and net test
Economic Aspects:
 Un-recuperated MTG’s are of lower cost but have low
efficiency.
 Capital cost of MTG involves hardware, associated manuals,
software’s and all.
Types of cost Cost(in dollars)

Capital cost $700-$1000/kw

Operational and $.005-$.016/kw
maintenance cost

 Initial units require more expected visits, later once year

schedule is sufficient.
Advantages and disadvantages:
Advantages:
 Low maintenance, cheap and easy installation.
 Compact size and have Light weight
 Good efficiency and utilize waste fuels.
 Low emission and less noise

Disadvantages:
 Low power output and efficiency for higher temperatures.
 Distortion in Time- variable electrical and thermal demands.
Applications:
 Stand by power source.
 Utilize variety of fuels, hence useful in resource recovery.
 Well suited for small commercial buildings like restaurants,
hotels, small offices, retail stores etc.
 Used as CHP systems.
 Case study:
i) CHP system installed in Radisson hotel in Santa
Maria, California.
ii) CHP system in Capstone micro turbine installation in
Inns of America in Carlsbad, California.
Conclusions:
 Have ample importance in present Era as its concerned with
eco-friendly power generation.
 Now a days automotive companies are interested in MTG’s.
 There are number of ongoing developments to improve its
design, lower costs and to increase performance.
 Variety of energy consumer already using MTG as its reliable
and low operating cost, neglecting high initial cost.
 It will conquer energy sector in near future keeping present
environment scenario.
