ETHICAL DIMENSIONS ON ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS

The use of plastic and its effects on the environment:

• Why is plastic bad for the environment? Plastic is
bad for the environment in many ways. The main
impact on the environment is the fact that it is made
from petroleum which is a non renewable resource
and involves a high energy refining process to
produce the plastic. Another huge impact is the fact
that it is the main cause of landfill waste across the
world, and is ingested by many marine and land
animals every day to fatal consequences.
ETHICAL DIMENSIONS ON ENVIRONMENTAL
PROBLEMS CONT’D
How can we help with this environmental
disaster?
• The answer is not as simple as not using plastic
anymore We must all come together to fight this
disaster. Simple steps like using paper bags or
reusable bags at the grocery store will make a huge
impact if enough people start to use them regularly.
• It is estimated that 500 million to 1 trillion plastic
bags are used yearly world wide. If even a quarter of
these were to be recycled we could cut down on
landfill waste dramatically.
• The last major effort to cut down on the use of
plastic would be to stop using plastic bottles. More
than 30 billion Plastic water bottles are used each
year world wide and only 2 out of 10 of those bottles
are recycled. Plastic bottles also leach carcinogenic
chemicals into the water inside of the bottles.
ETHICAL DIMENSIONS OF NATURAL RESOURCES

• Natural resources are being used

more and more every day and the
ability of the environment to
sustain the resources is
decreasing at an alarming rate.
• It is estimated by the year 2050
more than 85% of non-renewable
resources are going to depleted.
• The worlds rain forests are also in
danger of being completely gone
in the near future from farmers
burning down land for cocaine.
WHAT RIGHT DO OTHERS HAVE TO DEFINE WHAT
IS ETHICAL FOR ME?
• The government has the right to
define what is ethical for me
because they know what is best for
the country.
• The government in the end has the
most control over what we do.
• Thankfully in the USA we have a
constitution to outline what is
ethical and what is not.
HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE HUMAN RIGHTS?

• I define human rights as the

rights that all human beings
have no matter your age, race,
gender, or social status.
• Human rights are the basis on
which all people are created
equally.
• The Constitution of the United
States of America is based off
of these unalienable rights that
all humans are entitled to.
