Background
PRELIMINARY Mathematics for elementary students is useful for the interests of life in
1 their environment, to develop their mindset, and to study later sciences.

One of the most important elements in the discussion about education in

2 relation to culture is the integration of content that is understood as the
integration of multicultural education in the curriculum.

The idea of integrating ethnomatematics into curriculum and pedagogy

3 reflects developments in mathematics education.

The ethnomatematics approach is intended to make school mathematics

4 subject matter more relevant and meaningful to students and to
disseminate the overall quality of education.
In the education process, especially in the 2013 curriculum, improving
5 ethical and moral values among adolescents is one of the targets to be
achieved.
By implementing ethnomatematics approach, it is expected that teachers
6 and students get an idea of ethnomatematics and finally can improve
mathematics learning achievement.

In fact, the learning process in the classroom, the teacher does not use the
7 environment especially cultural values.

DISCUSSION
The Role of Ethnomatematics in Mathematics Learning

Law Number 20 of 2003 concerning the National Education System states that
the curriculum is a set of plans and arrangements regarding the purpose,
content, and material of learning and the methods used to guide the
implementation of learning activities to achieve certain educational goals. The
curriculum can be developed, and curriculum development is carried out with
reference to national education standards to realize national education. The
development of the curriculum is tailored to the education unit, regional
potential, and students. 2013 curriculum uses a scientific approach which is a
scientific process-based approach that is organizing learning experiences in a
logical sequence covering the learning process, namely: observing, asking
questions, gathering information / trying, reasoning / associating and
communicating.
This approach is carried out using the direct or indirect learning mode as a
basis for implementing various learning strategies and models in accordance
with the Basic Competencies to be achieved. Ethnomatematics is a term about
mathematics that is viewed from the cultural side. Learning planning is
designed in the form of Syllabus and Learning Implementation Plan (RPP)
which refers to the Content Standard. Learning planning includes the
preparation of learning implementation plans and preparation of media and
learning resources, learning assessment tools, and learning scenarios
arranged with scientific syntax by utilizing culture as a source of learning.

schools, especially in elementary schools. Various forms of
activities, both daily activities and ritual activities of the

literature, have an Ethnomatematic value. Including the

both sculpture and painting, also have ethnomatematic

The application of ethnomatematics as a means to

motivate, stimulate students, can overcome saturation and
difficulties in learning mathematics. Mathematical values
contained in the game lamari, disco, and robot games are
multiples and number factors, this can be seen in the rules
of the number of players who always pair starting from 2, 4,
and 6 which are sequences of multiples of 2, whereas in
the game of learning material mathematics that can be

operations.
Perform introduction to natural numbers
Take measurements using the concept of circumference
and area.

Banana Island is rich in Lampung Coastal culture.

Education is expected to take its role in the preservation of
this priceless heritage. Mathematics, which has been seen
as a field of study far from cultural activities through this
research, is expected to be a pioneer for the birth of

CONCLUSION

Ethnomatematics is an approach in mathematics that

incorporates regional cultural elements. The research was
obtained from various daily habits of the community in terms
of arts and games, then described in mathematics learning.
Mathematical education has actually merged with the life of
the community itself. In mathematics learning activities in
schools the teacher's goal is the formation of a new scheme.
The formation of this new scheme is better than the existing
scheme in students. Therefore, it is very appropriate if in
teaching formal mathematics (school mathematics), teachers
should start with the informal mathematics applied by
children in the community. If the child has a well-established
scheme of mathematics used in the everyday world, then to
increase the existing knowledge, the teacher strengthens the
existing scheme or forms a new scheme based on the
existing scheme.
