INNOVATION IN EDUCATIONAL

ADMINISTRATION

TITLE: INDIVIDUAL CARE UNIT

Conception of the innovation:

Need of more individual attention in students.

DURATION:
Introduced in the year 2005, and still an ongoing
programme.

WHERE:

• Implemented at the Institution level as an experiment.

• Later on, extended to other government schools at
district level.
FOCUS AREA:
• To enhance the academic performance of the
students by assigning care and responsibility
of at least three students to one teacher.
OBJECTIVE:
• Improve academic performance of the
student.
• Improve student attendance at school.
• Improve class participation and interaction.
• Offer guidance, advice, counseling in personal
matters if desired.
• Improve teacher student relationship.
DESCRIPTION:
• Check class attendance, record of regularity of
class works and home works, record of
disciplinary issues .
• Offer guidance, advice or counseling.
• Other all-round areas of student's personal
life, family background, social life etc.
STRATEGY:
• Freedom to express concerns in smaller
groups.
METHOD:
• Meeting the students in the assigned groups and
enquiring about their study habits, class attendance,
health etc.
• At times, meeting one to one, if the need arises,
because there might be issues where personal
counseling might be required.
• Meeting sessions were usually held after school for half
an hour or more if necessary.
• Maintenance of a meeting and progress register to
record sessions and submission for monthly reviews to
assigned coordinators or the Principal of the school.
Resource requirement and
mobilization:
• Physical: A quiet classroom with chairs,
benches etc.
• Human: Co-operative students and an
empathetic teacher.
• Financial: Some small amount of money to
buy a register .
Support extended by Community and
the State/Education department:
• By conducting seminars of the heads of
schools for discussion and possibility.
• Implementation of the idea in all the
government schools in the district.
ENSURANCE OF CONTINUITY BEYOND THE
TENURE OF POSTING THE INNOVATORS

• Encouragement of the incumbent Principal of

the school to carry on the programme.
• Chances of further follow-up in the schools
where it was introduced.
Problems faced in giving shape to the idea
of innovation and its implementation:
• Some assigned teachers were irregular to arrange meetings with
the students
• Some students would play truant or refuse to participate in the
interactions
• In bigger schools, as was in my case, often there were not enough
rooms/space for meeting privately affecting the quality of the
sessions
• Some teachers would not maintain or submit the progress reports
regularly. thus affecting progress
• Sometimes, due to school and administrative duties, the head of
the school delayed the reviews of the meetings
• Often, since the assigned teachers were not trained in counseling as
such, could not maintain confidentiality of the sessions which hurt
the sentiments of some students
Success of the Innovation:

• Many students started performing better

academically as well as their all-round
development.
• The school produced many subject toppers
capped by a student securing top 3 rank at the
state HSSLC examination in commerce stream.
• Students frequently ranked in the top three in
essay, extempore, debate, science seminars
etc at the district as well as at the state levels.

state level.
