 Psychological Test
 Individual vs. group test

 Paper vs. pencil test

 Language vs. non language test

 Speed vs. power test

PSYCHOLOGICAL TEST
 A test is a systematic procedure for observing
behaviour and describing it with the aid of
numerical scales or fixed categories.
 Hugo Munsterberg used his tests in industry
prior to 1910 at the Boston Elevated Company,
the use of psychological testing as a tool of
personnel selection.
 Tests are most carefully developed instruments,
following certain highly standardized procedures
discovered by the efforts of many psychologists
over a long period of time.
INDIVIDUAL TEST
VS.
GROUP TEST
GROUP TEST

 Group testing as the name implies it is

about examining an individual by a whole
group. The test administered by a large group at
one time is known as group testing.
 The group test is mainly done to meet the
practical need. These were designed as mass
testing instruments.
 The group testing not only allows the
simultaneous examination but also make use of
the simplified processes and the instruction.
ADVANTAGE

1. One time, more people.

2. The role of examiner simplifies.
3. Score more objective.
4. Better norms are established.
5. Efficiency is more.
6. Less power is required.
DISADVANTAGE

1. The results and the information is less accurate.

2. Less cooperation is maintained.
3. The results are examined readily.
4. Difficult to maintain rapport.
5. The interest is not easily maintained.
6. The examinees response in a more strict
manner.
7. Boredom over easy items and frustrated over
difficult ones.
INDIVIDUAL TEST

 The individual test of intelligence is administered

by one individual at a time. The test in this case
requires more verbal responses in order to
examine the individual.

 The qualities of an individual are calculated on

an individual level. This kind of test are
conducted in the places like hospitals, clinics,
psychologist or the places where diagnosis is done
mainly.
ADVANTAGE
1. More attention is paid
2. The behavior can be observed easily
3. The examinee can easily convince and encourage
the person
4. The results are accurate
5. The results and the scores are not dependent
6. The speed is one additional factor
7. The efficiency is way better than other methods
8. More time to understand the person
DISADVANTAGE

1. Time consuming
2. Trained and experienced examiner is required
3. It costs more than other procedures
4. Lots of money and investment is required
PAPER PENCIL TESTS
VS.
PERFORMANCE TEST
PAPER PENCIL TESTS
 Paper and pencil tests are one of the most
common forms of testing.
 All the items of the test are printed and
responses to them are to be checked by a pencil
on the test itself or an answer sheet provided in
the subject
 Paper and pencil instruments refer to a general group
of assessment tools in which candidates read questions
and respond in writing.
Developing paper and pencil tests by 4 basic steps:
1. Listing topic areas/tasks

2. Specifying the response format, number of questions,

the time limit and difficulty level.
3. Writing the questions and developing the scoring
guide.
4. Reviewing the questions and scoring guide.

PERFORMANCE TEST
 A person has usually to manipulate certain objects or
pictures or blocks or assemble parts of a mechanical device,
that is, to perform or act in a certain fashion.

 In some personality test like situational tests the subject

has to perform some activities in typical everyday life
situation.

 Most of performance tests are individual test because the

examiner has to observe carefully the performance of the
subject, his approach to the given problem, because such
observation may very often shed some light on his
behaviour.

 In some performance tests, however, the examiner can very

well observe small groups of people performance the test
tasks.
LANGUAGE TEST
VS.
NON-LANGUAGE TESTS
LANGUAGE TEST
Also known as verbal test.
In these the subjects make use of language in which the
instructions are given in words, written, oral or both the
individuals being tested are required to use language, verbal or
written, for their responses.

The test content is designed with verbal material which

may include varieties of items like:
a. Vocabulary tests:
In these the subject is required to give the meanings of words or
phrases.
b. Memory tests:
These are designed to test the subjects immediate and long-term
memory and include all recall and recognition type of items like
telephone number, vehicle number, teachers, names, etc.
c. Comprehension tests:
By means of these, the subject is tested for the ability to grasp,
understand and react to a given situation.
d. Information tests:
The subject is tested on his knowledge about the
things around him by means of these tests.
e. Reasoning tests:
In these tests the subject is asked to provide answers
which demonstrate his ability to reason logically,
analytically, systematically, inductively or deductively
as, for example 1, 2, 4, 7, 11, 16, 22, 29, ….
f. Association tests:
Through these test items the subject is tested for his
ability to point out the similarities or dissimilarities
between two or more concepts or objects.
NON-LANGUAGE TEST
 Also known as non verbal test.
 An examination wherein the problems or queries as well as the
solutions or answers aren't expressed in words.

 "Non language tests are often used in testing situations

where critical thinking is being evaluated”.

 The Non-language Test is a group test composed of non-verbal

material. Furthermore, the test can be given without the use of
language.

 Performance tests are the typical examples for these type of tests.
Here the individual is tested through material objects, where he is
instructed orally and the reactions of the person is assessed with
respect to the individual’s approach towards the work. Then
needed directions are provided to him.
SPEED TEST
VS.
POWER TEST
SPEED TEST
 In a speed test, there is a time limit within which
the test taker is required to answer all the items .
 Such a test evaluates the individual on the basis of
time taken to answer the items accurately.
 It is one in which how quickly a person answers
question is measured.
 Example: Typing test for a word-processing job.
Applicants are instructed to type as much of a
writing sample as they can in 5 minutes, and they
are scored on the basis of how much they finished
and the numbers of errors they made.
POWER TEST
 Power test assesses the underlying ability of the
individuals by allowing them sufficient time.
 These test do not have any time limit. The items are
generally arranged in an increasing order of
difficulty.
 It is a calculation of how many people a scientist
must consider when creating a sample for their
study.
 Examples: mostly college exams are power tests;
although the items are somewhat difficult, students
are given what is believed to be enough time to
complete them all.
