INTRODUCTION
AUTOMATION:

•Automation is the use of control systems.

•Computers and controllers are used to control industrial

machinery and processes, to optimize productivity in the
production of goods and delivery of services.

•Automation is a step beyond mechanization.

•Automation reduces the human work.

•Automation increases the productivity.

•It increases the consistency in output.

Advantages of Automation:
•Performing tasks that are beyond human capabilities of size, weight,
speed, endurance, etc.

•Economy improvement: Automation may improve in economy of

enter-prises, society or most of humanity.

Disadvantages:

•Technology limits: Current technology is unable to automate all

the desired tasks.

•High initial cost: The automation of a new product or plant

requires a high initial cost.
PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC CONTROLLER

•PLC is software driven equipment like computer.

•Working of plc is decided by user through program.
•Depending on process requirement program is prepared.
•CPU sequentially read these instruction and operates
control elements based on input signals and program
instructions.
•Programming can be done online or offline.
•Normally programming or change in program is done in
memory of programming unit and then simply this change
is loaded in CPU memory of PLC.
ADVANTAGES OF PLCS

•Less wiring.
•Wiring between devices and relay contacts are done in
the plc program.
•Easier and faster to make changes.
•Reliable components make these likely to operate for years
before failure.
•They are cost effective.
•They are flexible , reliable and compact.
•They have significant advantages over traditional control
systems based on relay
What tasks do PLC perform?
•The logic control tasks such as interlocking , sequencing ,
timing and counting.
•They can also perform a variety of calculation ,
communication and monitoring tasks.
Components of PLC:
•CPU-brain of PLC
•Timers
•Counters
•Output relays
•Data storage
PLC OPERATION:

• Input scan
• Program scan
• Output scan
• House keeping

APPLICATION AREAS:

•Manufacturing/machining

•Food/beverage

•Metals

•Mining

•Petrochemical/chemical
TRAFFIC CONTROL USING PLC

• This two way traffic light project is a small model of

traffic light which we daily see in our life on street.

• With this circuit you can control two way traffics.

• There will be lights on both sides, like there is red

light on one side and green light will be on another
side.

• It will also have yellow light to alert the passengers

or drivers that now there signal are going to open.
• In this type of traffic control the traffic on
opposite sides can be controlled using plc
programming .

• The working process involves turning on the red

light on one side while green light on the other
side is on and vice versa ,where as yellow light is
turned on to make people alert and get ready.
T
START

Turn on Red light on one side and

Green light on the other side.

Delay Timej of 20 sec

Turn off red and Turn on Yellow light

on first side

Delay Time of 10 sec

Turn on Green light on first side and Red light on the

other side.
