INTRODUCTION
Fly ash concrete is an eco-friendly construction material in which fly
ash replaces portland cement.
Geopolymer concrete is an innovative ,eco-friendly construction
material.
It is used as replacement of cement concrete.
In geopolymer concrete cement is not used as a binding material.
Fly ash along with alkali solution are used as binders.
WHY NOT OPC?
It is the most used commodity in the world after water
It is also the energy intensive material
Cement production leads to high carbon-dioxide emission.
1 ton of CO2 is produced for every 1 ton of cement
WHY GEOPOLYMER
CONCRETE?
Reduces demand of OPC which leads to emission of CO2
Utilise the waste materials such as flyash,GGBS and silica fume
Protect water bodies from condamination due to flyash disposal
Produce a more durable infrastructure
ABSTRACT
Geopolymer is a new development in the world of concrete in which
cement is totally replaced by pozzolanic materials like fly ash and
activated by highly alkaline solutions to act as a binder in the
concrete mix.
In the concrete mix design we are replacing the cement by flyash
and we are adding alkali activators to attain more strength.
By replacing the cement by flyash 20% more strength can be
attained.
Alkaline solution used for present study is combination of sodium
hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium silicate(sio2).
MIX DESIGN
A nominal cube is casted on m30 grade of concrete.
Sodium silicate solution with Na2o – 16.37% SiO2 – 34.35% and
H20 – 49.28% and sodium hydroxide solution having 13M
concentration were maintained.
Water geopolymer binder ratio will be 0.35.
Alkaline solution to fly-ash ratio is 0.35.
The above mentioned ratio is for 150mm cubes
MIX DESIGN
Calculation of the Quantity of Alkaline Activators
Based on the quantity of fly ash (F) determined in
the previous step, the amount of total solution is obtained using
solution-to-fly ash ratio of 0.35 by mass. After that, quantity of
sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide is decided using sodium
silicate-to-sodium hydroxide ratio of 1 by mass.
Calculation of Total Solid Content in Alkaline Solution
Calculate solid content in sodium silicate and
sodium hydroxide solution on the basis of percentage solid present
in each solution
MIX DESIGN
Target Mean Strength (F ) for Mix Design
ck

Fck = fck +1:65 X S

The standard deviation, S for each grade of geopolymer
concrete shall be calculated, separately on the basis of minimum 30
test samples. With reference to IS 456-2000, the value of S is assumed
as per Table 1 in the first instant as mentioned in clause 9. 2. 4. 2.
Selection of Quantity of Fly ash (F)
Quantity of fly ash selected based on target mean strength
and fineness of fly ashat solution-to-fly ash ratio of 0.35
MIX DESIGN
Selection of Quantity of Water
Workability of geopolymer concrete is depending
on total quantity of water including water present in both alkaline
solutions and the degree of workability. Select the total quantity of
water required to achieve desired workability based on fineness of
fly ash
HOW FLYASH HELPS IN
CONCRETE?
Reduced Heat of Hydration
Increases Workability of Concrete
Permeability and corrosion protection
SLUMP VALUE FOR VARIOUS
TYPES OF CONSTRUCTION
GEOPOLYMER CONCRETE
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES

High compressive strength Difficult to create

High tensile strength Requires special handling
Low creep Geo-polymerisation process is
sensitive
Low drying shrinkage
Highly durable
Fire proof
CONCLUSION
Geopolymer concrete is a promising construction material due to its
low carbon dioxide emission.
The construction industry is in demand of eco friendly & greener
materials which are durable. As compared to the existing concrete
materials.
fly ash is advantageous but its uses as tested against strength &
durability needs to be confirmed. The present project work
emphasized on the research & development activity in construction
materials using fly ash with geo polymers.
