Introduction
• The mechanical shaft seal is the part of pump
that separates the liquid from the atmosphere.
• They keep tight at smaller displacements and
vibrations in the shaft.
• They do not require any adjustment.
• Seal faces provide a small amount of friction and
minimise the power loss.
• The shaft does not slide against any of the seals
components and thus its not damaged because of
wear.
Types of Mechanical Shaft Seals:
1. Unbalanced O-ring seal with rigid torque transmission
system
2. Rubber bellows seal
3. Unbalanced O-ring seal with spring as torque transmission
element
4. Balanced O-ring seal with spring on the atmospheric side
5. Rubber bellows seal with reduced seal face
6. Balanced cartridge O-ring seal unit with rigid torque
transmission system
7. Balanced, rolled-metal bellows cartridge seal unit
8. Two seals mounted in a “back-to-back” arrangement
9. Two seals mounted in a “tandem” arrangement
