Philosophical genesis - early XX
century
• Philosophical idea of responsibility
– Existence philosophy – there is no freedom wihout
responsibility and vice versa
– Human beings should be responsible for all taken
activities. Responsibility is the result of freedom
• Dialog philosophy
– Consequences of „noticing” another people and highliting
the dialog role in shaping society
Business ethics
• Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) distinguished from
Business Ethics (BE)
• BE - the application of philosophical and social-psychological
concepts to business dilemmas and practices
• Business ethics constitutes foundations for CSR
• Lack of ethical elements in economy life has been noticed in
the early XX century

• BE addresses moral values in relation to individual people
(correctly)

CSR- the idea
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) -the early
1970
• corporate responsibility,
• corporate accountability,

• corporate citizenship or stewardship,
• responsible entrepreneurship,
• “triple bottom line,”
• “responsible competitiveness”
• “corporate sustainability”
CSR – the idea
• CSR – the way organizations integrate social,
environmental and economic concerns into their
values, culture, decision making, strategy and
operations in a transparent and accountable manner
and thereby establish better practices within the firm,
create wealth and improve society
• corporate behaviour that goes beyond legal
requirements; developing strategies that enable
organizations to exceed their minimum required
obligations to stakeholders (ie, employee welfare,
working conditions, green issues, products etc.)
CSR – the idea
• In practice, CSR is currently treated as ‘best
practice’ i.e., the rigorous assessment and
management of a company’s impacts across
the entire business from the point of material
supply to product disposal.
• CSR in its broader sense means companies’
responsibility to improve all their impacts on
society, when not required to do so by law.
CSR - definitions
