VISION
 One of the main driving force for creation of Telangana has
been neglect of water Resources utilization in the region over
many decades leading to acute distress in farming sector.
 Consequently, the Government of Telangana has taken up
the task of providing assured irrigation facilities to 1 Crore
acres (including existing irrigated area) as one of its main
flagship programmes spread throughout the state
 The ultimate objective is ensuring 1 Lakh Acres of irrigation
in each of the rural constituencies.
 Comprehensive restoration of Minor Irrigation systems

NIZAMSAGAR PROJECT
Preamble:
• Nizamsagar Project was constructed by the erstwhile Nizam’s Government during 1923-1931
across Manjeera River a tributary to Godavari river with a storage capacity of 29.72 TMC at
Achampet (Vg), Nizamsagar (M), Nizamabad District to provide irrigation to 2.75 lakh acres in
nizambad district.. This is the third project in Manjeera valley, the first being Ghanpur Anicut
(1918) with 17,000 Acres ayacut and second being Pocharam Project (1922) with an ayacut of
17,200 Acres.

• By the passage of time, the storage capacity of Nizamsagar Project was reduced from 29.72 to
11.79 TMC due to silting up of reservoir. After conducting detailed bed surveys of reservoir the
storage capacity has been increased to 17.91 TMC, in 1976 by raising FRL from +1400.50’ to
+1405.00’ (4 ½ feet). Despite increase in capacity, the inflows in to the Project dwindled year
after year, due to increase in utilization of water in upper reaches. As a result, the gap ayacut
has been increased year after year under Project.

14
• The total ayacut, contemplated as per the Project report is 2.75 lakh Acres and is delocalized to
2.31 lakh Acres on account of submergence of certain ayacut in foreshore of SRSP and some
ayacut coming under the command of SRSP which is on the downstream side of this Project.
To meet the requirement of certain portion of gap ayacut, APSIDC and SRSP have taken up 12
Lift Irrigation Schemes on river Godavari to irrigate 23,000 Ac of this Project. With this, the net
gap ayacut stood at 92,585 Acres, which lies between distributaries D/50 to D/82.

• To meet the irrigation requirement of the gap ayacut Alisagar Lift Irrigation Scheme and Argula
Rajaram Guptha LI Scheme from foreshore of SRSP were constructed in between the years
2005 to 2007 and commissioned during the year 2007. Singitham and Kalyanivagu diversions to
supplement Nizamsagar main canal have been constructed at a cost of Rs. 985 lakhs as
suggested by the Technical expert Committee to minimize the gap ayacut, with National Bank
for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) loan assistance.

• The original cost of the project at the time of construction was Rs.305.00 lakhs/ 457.08 Lakhs
(Revised).

Preamble:
• The Alimineti Madhava Reddy Srisailam Left Bank Canal Project (AMRP) was started in 1983
to provide irrigation facilities in the drought prone areas of Nalgonda District for 3 lakh acre
Irrigated Dry (ID), besides supplying drinking water to the fluoride affected villages enroute,
utilizing 30 Thousand million cubic feet of Krishna Water. This scheme has two alternatives.
• 1. Gravity scheme from foreshore of Srisailam reservoir, through two tunnels.
• 2. Lift scheme from foreshore of Nagarjuna Sagar Reservoir.
• The works on main canal from common point (i.e., km 25.00) were taken up during 1983-84,
pending finalization of Head Works.
• In April, 1995, the Government decided to take up lift scheme from the foreshore of
Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir, to achieve early benefits, as the tunnel scheme would require 7
to 8 years time for its completion. Accordingly lift scheme works are taken up and completed.
• The Government in 2004 decided to take up tunnel scheme as a permanent solution and
accorded approval for tunnel scheme for Rs 2,813.00 crore in 8/2005.
• The Government have also approved a lift irrigation scheme from foreshore of
Udayasamudram balancing reservoir, for Rs 699.00 crore in 6/2007 to irrigate an additional
ayacut of 1.00 lakh acre.
