SYSTEM DEFINITION
AND
2
CONCEPTS
TOPIC OBJECTIVES

 To understand system definition and concepts.

 To understand characteristics and types of system.

 To gain knowledge of Real-life Business sub systems.

 To understand types of System Models

3
INTRODUCTION
 In business, System Analysis and Design refers to the process of
examining a business situation with the intent of improving it
through better procedures and methods.
 System analysis and design relates to shaping organizations,
improving performance and achieving objectives for profitability
and growth. The emphasis is on systems in action, the
relationships among subsystems and their contribution to meeting
a common goal.

4
OVERVIEW OF SYSTEM ANALYSIS
• Systems development can generally be thought of as having two
major components: Systems analysis and Systems design.
• System analysis, then, is the process of gathering and
interpreting facts, diagnosing problems, and using the
information to recommend improvements to the system. This is
the job of the systems analyst.

5
OVERVIEW OF SYSTEM DESIGN
• System design is the process of planning a new business system
or one to replace or complement an existing system. But before
this planning can be done, we must thoroughly understand the
old system and determine how computers can best be used to
make its operation more effective.

6
INTRODUCTION TO
SYSTEM, ITS
CHARACTERISTICS AND
TYPES

7
SYSTEM
A system is an orderly grouping of interdependent components
linked together according to a plan to achieve a specific objective.

• Basic implications of a System:

1. A system must be designed to achieve a predetermined objective.
2. Interrelationships and interdependence must exist among the
components.
3. The objectives of the organization as a whole have a higher
priority than the objectives of its subsystems.

8
CHARACTERISTICS OF A SYSTEM
1. Organization
2. Interaction
3. Interdependence
4. Integration
5. Central Objective

9
ELEMENTS OF A SYSTEM
1. Outputs and Inputs
2. Processors
3. Control
4. Feedback
5. Environment
6. Boundaries and Interfaces

10
TYPES OF SYSTEM
 Physical or Abstract Systems
 Open or Closed Systems

 Man-made Information Systems

11
REAL-LIFE BUSINESS SUB SYSTEMS

 Functional Information System is based on the various business

functions such as Production, Marketing, Finance and Personnel etc.
These departments or functions are known as functional areas of
business. Each functional area requires applications to perform all
information processing related to the function.

12
SYSTEM MODELS
Systems that are intended for use in real-world environments should
be designed to function correctly in the widest possible range of
circumstances and in the face of many possible difficulties and
threats.

 Types of System Models:

1. Physical Model
2. Architectural Model
3. Fundamental Model

13
POPULAR FUNCTIONAL AREAS OF BUSINESS
ORGANIZATIONS

 Financial Information System

 Marketing Information System

 Production Information System

 Human Resource Information System / Personal

Information System
 Material information system

14
TASKS/ QUESTIONS TO BE COMPLETED
 What do you mean by system? Discuss different types of system.
 Explain characteristics of a System.

 Design a system for Office Automation.

 What is the main difference between System Analysis and System

Design.
