“ Every problem has a
solution. ”
REVIEW:

Determine the opening of the

graph and the vertex of the given
Quadratic function.
1. y =2𝑥2

2. y = (𝑥 + 6) +3
2

3. y = −(𝑥 − 2) − 4

ACTIVITY:
Read and analyze the situation below and answer the questions
that follow.
A local government of Calamba City launches a
recycling campaign of waste materials to schools in order to
raise student awareness of environment protection and the
effects of climate change. Every kilogram of waste materials
earn points that can be exchanged for school supplies and
grocery items. Paper, earns 5 points for every kilo.
ANALYSIS:
1. What happen to the number of points when the
numbers of kilograms of paper is doubled?
Tripled?

2. How many kilograms of paper will the Grade 9

class have to gather in order to raise 50 points?

3. Does the point vary if the number of kilogram

increases?

4. Do you get the same difference from the given

points?
DIRECT VARIATION
- a situation procedures pairs of
numbers in which their ratio is
constant.
THE STATEMENT:
“y varies directly as x”

“y is directly proportional to x”

and

“y is proportional to x”

May be translated mathematically as y=kx, where is k is the

constant of variation.

For two quantities, x and y, an increase in x causes

an increase in y as well. Similarly, a decrease in x causes a
decrease in y.
EXAMPLES:
Translate statement into direct variation.
1. The volume V of a cylinder varies directly as
its height h.
V = kh
2. The distance D travelled by a car varies
directly as its speed s.
D = ks
3. The weight W of an object is directly
proportional to its mass m.
W = km
4. If y varies directly as x and y = 24 when
x = 6, find the variation constant .

Solution:

Express the statement “y varies directly as x”

as y=kx.
Solve for k by substituting the given values in
the equation.

therefore, the constant of variation is 4.

5. The table below shows that the distance d varies
directly as the time t. Find the constant of variation and
the equation which describes the relation.

Solution:

Since the distance d varies directly as the time t. then

d = kt

Using one of the pairs of values, (2,20), from the table,

substitute the values of d and t in d =kt and solve for k.
WORD PROBLEM:
6. Kardel gets paid hourly in his job. If Kardel
gets 50 pesos for 5 hours shifts, how much will
he be paid for a 7 hours shift?

Paid (p) = 50
Hours (h) = 5
GROUP
ACTIVITY
INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITY:
True or False:
_____ 1. The equation y = kx, where k is a nonzero
constant, represents inverse variation.

_____2. If c varies directly as d, and k is the variation

constant, then
c = kd.

_____ 3.If y varies directly as x and y = 24, when x = 6 then

k = 3.

_____ 4. In the equation, y = kx, k is the constant of

variation.
𝒙
_____ 5. To get the constant of variation, it is .
𝒚
GENERALIZATION:

1. How do you solve direct variation?

2. How did you find the constant variation?

3. Cite an example of situation that illustrate

direct variation.
ASSIGNMENT:
Word Problem:

The weight W of an object on Mars is

directly proportional to its weight B on
earth. A man who weighs 118.75 kg on
earth weights 47.5 kg on Mars. Find the
weighs of a man on Mars if he weighs 98
kg on earth.
