The document describes a student project to design and develop an omni-directional vertical axis wind turbine. The objectives are to design a Savonius wind turbine capable of producing 1KW of power with maximum efficiency given certain wind conditions, and to experimentally evaluate the design. The project scope involves evaluating different blade contours and turbine parameters to obtain the highest performance. The methodology outlines initial turbine sizing, testing different designs, and experimentally validating the optimal design in a wind tunnel. A timeline is also provided.

• Vertical Axis Wind Turbine :
– Darrieus Wind Turbine : Lift- Based Wind Turbine – Savonius Wind Turbine: Drag-Based Wind Turbine INTRODUCTION Types of Wind Turbines INTRODUCTION Working Principle of Savonius Wind Turbine PROJECT TITLE JUSTIFICATION PROJECT TITLE JUSTIFICATION • Compared to Darrieus, Savonius wind turbines are self starting, easy to fabricate and can be used in turbulent environment
• Because of these reasons Savonius wind
turbines are more suitable in urban environment. OBJECTIVES • Specification for Vertical Axis Wind Turbine: PARAMETERS RANGE
Reynolds's Number 1,50,000
Coefficient of Power 0.25
Wind Velocity 10 m/s
Power 1000 watt
Frontal Area 6.5 sq. meter
OBJECTIVES – Design a Savonius wind turbine capable of producing Power 1KW with highest efficiency for flow conditions of Reynolds's Number=1,50,000, Coefficient of Power=0.25 and wind velocity=10 m/s. – Conduct extensive literature survey and obtain analytical design parameters for VAWT. – Geometrical modelling and obtain simulation results. – To fabricate a scaled down model according to scaling laws and experimentally evaluate the design in a wind tunnel at wind speed=10m/s – Experimentally obtained results are to be compared with analytical results. SCOPE • Majority of the research work on Savonius Vertical axis wind turbine assumed a semi-circular blade contour. • Scope of this project is to: – Design and evaluate different blade contours. – Evaluate the performance of the Savonius Vertical axis wind turbine considering major parameters such as Tip Speed Ratio, Overlap Ratio, Number of blades and Multi-staging. – Obtain highest possible Coefficient of Performance. METHODOLOGY METHODOLOGY • Based on the power required 1KW and assuming initial Coefficient of Power = 0.25 and Coefficient of torque values. The frontal area of Vertical Axis Wind Turbine is deduced as 6.5 m2. • After testing different blade design, number of blades and validating the best configuration, we intend to vary overlap ratio and spacing ratio to obtain the most optimal design. • Using these parameters a comparison between single stage and multi-stage is obtained. This design is scaled down and fabricated and experimentally tested in a wind tunnel. The data obtained is compared with simulation values. TENTATIVE TIME PLAN OF THE PROJECT
