EVALUATION

OF
GUIDANCE
SERVICES
– Authorities in guidance agree that the future of guidance services depends on
evaluation. The results of evaluation help the guidance staff, teachers,
administrators and parents gain new insights which will enable them to perform
better.
Components of the
Evaluation Process
1. Formation of Values
2. Definition of Objectives
3. Selection of Measurement Procedures or Criteria
4. Planning and Implementation of Objectives
5. Measurement of Outcomes and Interpretation of Results
Formation of Values

▪ First step
▪ The process of determining what is desirable
▪ What would be good for the client in terms of behavioural changes to meet
their needs
▪ Should answer the question “What do I believe?”
▪ This will lead to definition of objectives
Formation of Values

– Drug awareness
Definition of Objectives

According to Suchman, 5 questions must be answered

1. What behaviours in terms of knowledge, skills, and attitudes, understanding,
must take place for the values of the planning group be realized?
2. Who constitutes the target group for the guidance process?
3. Under what conditions will the behaviours be observable?
4. When are the desired changes in behaviours to take place?
5. What are the specified standards of accomplishment to be met and levels of
proficiency in terms of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and understandings
required for the values to be realized?
Definition of Objectives

– To raise awareness of the adverse effects of drugs and discourage substance

abuse.
Selection of Measurement
Procedures – How is it done?
▪ The third task of setting the criterion of effectiveness by knowing what one
hopes to accomplish and having the available means of measuring what is
accomplished
▪ The criterion is some observable, measurable factor which is used to show that
an objective of the program has been attained
▪ Results of the guidance must be tentative and evaluation must be a continuous
process
▪ It must never be forgotten that conclusions which are valid today may be
invalid tomorrow
Selection Measurement of
Procedures
– Symposium/Forum
What is Program Planning?

▪ 4th step, the process of careful analysis of the situation

▪ Consideration of relevant information
▪ Guiding resource persons who will help in the planning of the program that will
produce desired outcomes
▪ In planning implementation this must be done under carefully monitored
conditions
Program Planning

– The symposium will consist of lectures that will tackle different topics
concerning drug/substance abuse.
Measurement of Outcomes and
Interpretation of Results
▪ How are the outcomes measured: How are the results interpreted?
▪ 5th component of the process
▪ Effects of the program are determined
▪ It should indicate both the qualitative interpretation after the quantitative
results
▪ The amount of behaviour change must be assessed according to the present
levels of proficiency
▪ Each individual, each basic service, and the total guidance program must be
evaluated
Measurement of Outcomes and
Interpretation of Results
– To measure the effectiveness of the symposium an attitude scale towards drug
abuse will be handed out to every participant.
Conclusion

– The evaluation of guidance services can determine the strengths and

weaknesses of the program. It is necessary to know the kind of changes desired
and the means by which these changes could be brought about.
▪ The process of evaluation needs the formation of values, definition of
objectives, selection of criteria measures, planning and implementing the
program, measurement of outcomes and interpretation of results
▪ Evaluation is a continuous process, a team undertaking and an outside audit.
– Case: A person feels anxious and depressed because she has a pessimistic
perception of herself.
– Step 1: Formation of Values - The client needs to develop self-confidence and
optimism.
– Step 2: Definition of Objectives - By the end of the sessions, the client will gain
confidence and a positive outlook of herself.
– Step 3: Selection Measurement of Procedures - The client will undergo
counseling.
– Step 4: Program Planning - The counseling will be conducted through talk
therapy, bibliotherapy, and other activities.
– Step 5: The guidance counselor wkll administer a Depression, Anxiety, Stress
(DAS) scale to assess if her anxiety and depression due to her pessimism has
significantly lessened.
