Title of production / name / competition /

client
The name of my short film is waiting for kalocalre-e, it means waiting
for summer in Greek, I named it this due the fact summer to me is
when people tend to go of on adventures and explore new things and
my idea is based on a girl waiting going of on adventures and exploring
new things hence waiting for kalocalre and summer in Greek just
sounded cooler.
I chose the aesthetica short film festival as my competition due to the
lack of rules and regulations as when having these restrictions in the
past I have felt very limited with my ideas and felt like I couldn’t use
100% of my creative capabilities.
Rationale / Concept / Evaluation
I knew I wanted to create a short film as I had just created one for my
previous units and I was able to showcase my skills I have developed to
a higher level especially when it came to conveying emotions with
camera angles and sound. To help me write my weekly blogs at the end
of each week I have written
Original survey with ideas (3 of them) and result
(Focus groups / surveys)
I was equally enthusiastic about all three of my ideas so there was no
favouritism when it came to the surveys or focus group, but I was
pleased that the idea I had been working on previously had been
chosen as I had already quite familiar with the idea.
Elements of your topic research detailing how it
has changed your work – Developed idea
I began my topic research by looking into daydreaming and mind wandering as
daydreaming was the main theme of my short film. I found some interesting
research on what happens to the brain and I also looked into different philosophies
that people had on this topic which were very intriguing and I felt helped me to
develop my main character. I then looked into how I could present my main
characters mind wandering habits by reading a few books and looking into a
condition called maladaptive daydreaming. It was upon my research into
maladaptive daydreaming that I found another condition called Aphantasia. I had
watched a video on this previously and was quite interested in it, this psychiatric
condition very few people have that there are unable to picture anything in their
mind. It was then when I decide to change my concept, rather than my main
character daydreaming to much she wont be able to daydream at all. I then began
looking into aphantasia and how it affects different people, and how people deal
with the condition so I would know how my main character would act in different
situations.
Target Audience research (surveys / focus groups)
Developed idea
The feedback I received for my developed idea was very constructive
and I was able to work on the areas that seemed to need the most
progression the main things that people found least appealing were the
bullying aspect and how I portrayed my the main characters
relationship, which I then changed. One of the opponents people were
most concerned about where the locations of the film and where I
would film the as the locations will play a big part of the adventure
aspect of my production so I wanted to spend a lot of time planning my
locations carefully.
Codes and conventions – Genre research and
results
For my codes and conventions research I began by sending out a survey
asking people what kind of genre they thought my production would
be and 83% of people thought that my production was an adventure
short film which I wasn’t surprised about due to fact there is a lot of
traveling to vast locations. The second most popular genre was drama
which I was pleased with as it meant I would be able to make the
audience feel a lot more emotionally connected with the film and
characters as I would be able to add character development and there
would be a stronger realism aspect making the film more relatable to
the audience.
What you found out from analysing at least 2
productions in your genre and how that developed
your idea – the focus of this is on practical
elements (lighting / editing etc.)
Analysing was very important to me during this research as I wanted to
develop and improve my skills on showing different kinds of emotions
with cinematography and art direction and how I could show more in
depth character personality such as things like mannerisms. The secret
life of Walter Mitty was a very useful production when it came to
analysis as it showed the type of atmosphere I wanted to represent
with my main character in my production even down Walter
characteristics.
From this what elements have you decided to use
in your production
From my analysis of productions I decided to focus on how I could
represent emotions through my cinematography and art direction. I
picked certain emotions I wanted to create and then used different
camera angles and lighting to create the desired effect.
Narrative structure (Todorov / equilibrium
etc.)
After researching into the three different narrative structures I decided
to choose the linear narrative as I wanted my concept to be straight
forward without any mystery or past traumatic backstory. My story
doesn’t accurately follow todorov's narrative theory as the problem is
life as usual so at the end of film life doesn’t return to normal it returns
to life but without a problem.
Characters (main character profiles based off
Propp) Include pictures and main traits (not
documentary) – how they suit genre and target
audience
Erin is the damsel in distress and Oliver is the hero and I thought the
whole concept of opposites attract would work very well in this
situation. Erin needs someone like Oliver to help her escape as he has
the right mind set. I created my main character Erin by analysing
different characters from films of the same genre and similar concept a
very common personality trait I found was bad social skills, the
characters tend to push themselves away from civilisation and enjoy
their own company.
Show samples of your Auditions and reasons
behind fail / success
I auditioned a few people for each character and there where definitely
some auditions that stood out more than others. When I was
auditioning Emily for Erin's character I could tell she was very
enthusiastic about playing Erin she could clearly relate to her and when
I put her in a scenario where she would be playing the character she
executed it very well, where as when I was audition Cameron he was a
lot less enthusiastic about the role and didn’t understand the character
he was auditioning for as much as I would of liked.
Locations chosen and why – how they suit genre

I chose locations that I knew I could easily access as this has been a
recurring issue with all of my productions in the past, where I have
picked a location that is to far away or will inevitably require some sort
of payment to rent the space. For the locations that people
Mise-en-scene and how it adds to your narrative /
production (not documentary) – how they suit
genre / narrative.
Throughout my production, Erin, the main character will constantly be
surrounded photos or beautiful scenery due to her Aphantasia this is
how she finds comfort however she is becoming bored of seeing the
same scenery as she has lived in the same place all her life.
Sounds you will need to add(types of sounds /
songs / music that suit your genre)
Due to my festivals rules and regulations I am not allowed to use any
copyrighted sounds or music in my production so I will be creating my
own musical compositions to accompany the short film. I will be taking
a lot of inspiration from my personal favourite composers Joe Hasiashi
and Ryuichi Sakamoto as they are incredibly talented at conveying
emotions through their music and some of their pieces have been used
in films previously with the same genre as my short film and have
worked incredibly well.
Sections of storyboard that you are proud of

I began sketching out very rough shots of some of the scenes from my
production, as I intend to do more detailed drawings later on.
How all this suits your target audience
How all this will help you succeed in producing the
item you detailed in your proposal
Throughout my entire research I have made sure that my concept
appeals to my target audience through surveys and focus groups by
responding to feedback they have given. As I have developed my idea
towards my target audiences feedback they will find it more appealing
as it’s I have taken in what they have said. This will help me to create a
more professional production that will have a stronger more effective
emotional connection to the audience.
