• Title : Gravimetric Analysis of Corrosion Inhibition on Al-Mg-Si Alloy by
Environmental Friendly Products
• Volume/Issue/Page : 8 / 4 / 804-810
• Publication Year : 2014
• Aim of Study : To make a further contribution to research into the use of
natural products as a corrosion inhibitors suited to our surrounding
environment (less pollution).
Research Method

This study used gravimetric analysis. The materials used in this study are Al-
Mg-Si Alloy, seawater, and Natural products ( Natural Honey/NH, Vanillin/VL,
tapioca starch/TS ) as corrosion inhibitors. The procedure is by submersing
the specimens ( Al-Mg-Si alloy ) into seawater for some different durations (
in day ). The researcher gave 4 different treatments to the specimens. They
are by submersing the specimens into seawater without inhibitor, with NH
inhibitor, with VL inhibitor, and with TS inhibitor respectively. And then, the
researcher will compare the rate of corrosion reaction from each
treatments. Beside that, the researcher will also measure the impact of
inhibitor concentration to the weight loss (ΔW) of each specimens. This is
called by gravimetric analysis.
Result

when the immersed alloy is not added by corrosion inhibitor, the weight loss
is high. The weight loss increases with an increase in immersion time. But,
when the immersed alloy is added by corrosion inhibitors ( natural honey,
vanillin, and tapioca starch), the weight loss reduces.. But the significant
change in weight loss reduce is when adding about 200 ppm of corrosion
inhibitor. The result is same among adding of natural honey, vanillin, and
tapioca starch.
Discussion

The corrosion process of Al-Mg-Si alloy in seawater could be explained that

actually Al alloy is covered by passive film ( thin layer ). When immersed in
seawater (contain 3.5% NaCl and other ions), the passive film is dissolved
and penetrated by Chloride ions. Thus, dissolution of Al substrate occurs and
results in corrosion. But, by increasing inhibitor into submersed alloy, it will
reduce the weight loss (ΔW) of immersed alloy and also will reduce the
corrosion rate. The work principle of inhibitors is by forming a surface film on
the alloy surface and blocked the porous layer of alloy
Conclusion

Natural products like natural honey, vanillin, tapioca starch are good
inhibitor for corrosion. They can limit the aluminum dissolution in seawater.
The inhibition increases with the increase in corrosion inhibitor concentration.
Strengths and Weaknesses

This journal is very good, all parts of this journal are related each other.
Beside that the discussion part is explained well. But in my opinion, little
weakness of this journal is doesn`t attach the formula ( gravimetric
measurement ) to measure the weight loss of specimen

• Title : Effect of Temperature on the Corrosion Behaviour of Al-12Si-
1Mg Automotive Alloy in 3.5% NaCl Solution
• Volume/Issue/Page : 5 / 2 / 87-94
• Publication Year : 2017
• Aim of Study : To studying the effect of temperature on the corrosion
behavior of aged Al-12Si-1Mg automotive alloy in 3.5% NaCl solution.
Research Method
This research using conventional gravimetric measurements and complemented by
resistivity, optical micrograph, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray
analyzer (EDX) investigations. Procedure in this research by melted aluminium
pistons in a clay-graphite crucible under the suitable flux cover. Sample will be
casting and it will homogenized. The samples were wet-sanded mechanically with
SiC papers and de-greased with ethanol of 99% purity and then rinsed with plenty
of water. After dried the sample will be weighted. Researchers use 3.5% NaCl at pH
5.5 as aggressive medium. Sample put in two differences temperature. Weight-loss
measurements were made in triplicate and weight loss was calculated by taking
an average of these values:
Result and Discussion
1. Gravimetric Analysis
The change of weight loss was more predominant at higher temperature
solution in comparison to room temperature. It is because, for higher
temperature solution corrosion reaction increased and the diffusion of
corrosion species are accelerated which the causes the higher weight loss.
Corrosion rates increase at higher solution temperature. For most chemical
reactions, the reaction rate increases with increasing temperature.
Temperature affects the corrosion rate of metals in electrolytes primary
through its effect on factors which control the diffusion rate of oxygen.
Temperature affects the corrosion rate by virtue of its effect on the oxygen
solubility and oxygen diffusion coefficient. As temperature increases the
diffusion coefficient of oxygen also increases which tends to increase the
corrosion rate
2. Electrical Resistivity Analysis

Resistivity in heated solutions is higher than in room temperature. It is due to

fact that the increasing temperature accelerates the reaction rate and
gradual breakdown of the passive films
3. Optical Micrographic Observation

At room temperatures corrodent attack on surface is less due to less water

temperature. It results into low pit density. At higher solution temperature, pit
depth is found to be increasing due to availability of air. With increase in
water temperature attack of corrodent on surface is increased. This leads to
more pit density at higher solution temperatures.
• SEM Observation
the surfaces compose of thin corrosion
products from which the mushrooms
were formed and the other area is
covered with a thin layer of corrosion
products. The higher intensity of
corrosion is observed in the alloy which
immersed in hot solution. Most chemical
reactions do go faster the higher the
temperature. All atoms and molecules
are moving all the time. So increasing
the temperature causes them to move
faster and that increases most chemical
reactions
Conclusion

The results obtained indicate that the heated solution of 3.5% NaCl affected
on corrosion and increases its corrosion rate of Al-12Si-1Mg automotive alloy.
At room temperature the alloy showed better corrosion behavior. Corrosion
weight loss increases at higher temperature due to higher rate of chemical
reactions. Temperature affects the corrosion rate of Al-12Si-1Mg automotive
alloy because of it accelerates the reaction rate and diffusion rate of oxygen
and decreases of oxygen solubility. The gradual breakdown of the passive
films leads to more pit density at higher solution temperature. Higher pit
formation produces an uneven surface which increases the electrical resistivity
of the experimental alloy
Strengths and Weakness

The advantages from this journal is more than one data

analysis method. So each analysis results for each method
can be compared.
The weakness is because we want to focus on the
gravimetry. The number of methods used can also be a
weakness. Because, with many methods of data analysis,
each method will briefly discuss the results
