Irrigated land
 Walayar dam is a medium Irrigation Project

 The left bank canal of walayar dam covers a total irrigated

land of 3238 hectares of land in Palakkad district.

 The length of the Left canal is about 12.36 km.

 The ultimate irrigation potential of the dam is 7900

hectares.
Industries and their impact on
Environment
 Many industries including Malabar Cements depends on
this dam for their water requirement.

 Limestone quarry is located within the Walayar reservoir

forest and mining of it has led to deforestation in the area.

 It is estimated that an area of 250 ha. of virgin forest

largely of deciduous type has been deforested by the
Malabar cement factory. The waste materials of the
cement factory dumped into the drainage channels.
Silting in Dam
 Silting is a major problem to all the projects.

 The total capacity of dam is about 68 feet

 However, it is estimated that 38 feet is filled with silt by 2018.

 One area of the dam is located in Pollachi taluk and it required the
permission of the revenue authorities of Tamil Nadu to remove the
silt.

 The interstate water wing of kerala water resources department deals

with interstate water sharing aspects in walayar irrigation project
with tamilnadu, as it is located at the border of kerala and tamilnadu.
Floods in 2018
 The Walayar Dam had reached full storage level by July
9,2018
 It is the first time that it has reached this level so early in
the past 12 years.
