Cold chain management
Cold Chain is the system of transporting & storing vaccines
at recommended temperature from manufacturer to the
consumer.
Cold Chain is a network of Refrigerators, cold stores,
Freezers and Cold Boxes Organized and maintained at
accurate temperature to remain potent
India’s Contribution
 India has one of the UIP(Universal Immunization
programme).
 Under UIP, all the children in the entire country are
protected against the 6 deadly vaccine preventable
diseases(VPD)
 Service provided district hospitals , Community health
centres (CHC),Primary health centers(PHC), &
subcentres.
 Important elements for improving the immunization is
Cold Chain & Vaccine Logistics Management which is
the backbone of Immunization programme.
Vaccination
/immunization
 Immunization is the process where by a person is
made immune to any infectious disease, typically
by the administrations of a vaccine.
 Controlling &eliminating Life-Threatening
Infectious disease estimated to 2-3 millilions death
each year.
 One of the most cost effective health investments
Importance of Cold Chain

 Vaccines are
Biological products
Lose potency with time
Process of irreversible & accelerated if proper
storage conditions are not adhered to.
 Assurance in potent product & vaccine
programmes
(a)Professional Responsibilty ;
Confident the vaccines you give, will be effective.
(b)Public Health Responsibilty;
Public confidence faith in immunization
programmes.
 Ensuring Maximum benefit from Immunization
(a) Responsibilty not to waste NHS(National Health
Service)
(b)Reduce the waste as much as possible.
 Compliance with Manufacturer
Any vaccine that has not been stored at a
temperature of 2*- 8*C as per its requirement
should not be distributed.

Immunization Schedule
 Accessible to even the most hard to reach
population area.
 Active immunization/vaccination has been one of
the
“Ten great Public Health achievements in
the 20th Century”.
Objectives of WHO in
Vaccination
 Accelarate control of Vaccine preventable
diseases
 Strength routine immunization to meet
vaccination coverage targets.
