What Is Gearless Transmission
• It is also known as the elbow
mechanism.
• The part used for transmitting power
between driver and driven gear are
cylindrical bar bend at right angle.
• The rotating motion of the driver gear
is transmitted to the driven gear by the
reciprocating motion of bar bends
along with rotation of bar bends along
the axis of driver gear.
Working Mechanism
The synthesis of this project reveals that it
comprises of 3 to 8 cylindrical bar bends ,the
more the bars the smoother the operation.
These bars slide inside the hollow gears thus
forming a sliding pair .Motion is transmitted
through these bends only .These bars are
located at in the holes equally spaced around a
circle and are free to slide in and out as the shaft
revolves .This type of drive is especially suitable
where quite operation at high speed is essential.

Calculations
Dia of shafts = 12mm
RPM of the geared DC motor = 30 RPM
Shear stress on wood = 40N/mm2
Thus torque by torsion equation:
T/J = /R
T = 40124
646
T= 6.782 Nm
Similarly power = 2NT
60

= 2306.782 = 21.3 Watt

Applications
• As a wood cutting machine.
• As an air compressor.
• In tower clocks.
• In vehicles (go karts).
• For movement of periscope in
submarines.
• Lubrication pump in CNC lathe.

ADVANTAGES
 Ease of manufacturing.
 More efficient than old gears.
 Power can be transferred at any desired
angle.
 Complete freedom of interchangeability.
 Simple cooling system.
 Low cost of manufacturing
 Portability of parts.
 Misalignment of shafts can be tolerated to
some degree of extent.
 Can be used where space is limited.
LIMITATIONS
Does not work on very low starting torque.
Does not work at very high rpm.
Sudden load variation causes breakdown of
mechanism.
Improper hole drilling pose much problem.
Speed ratio is always constant i.e. 1:1.
FUTURE ASPECTS
Torque bearing capacity can be improved.
Flexible bends and pairs can be used to
provide torque at any desired angle.
Has a bright future in automation and
robotics.
Can be used in various home appliances like
juicer etc.
Can also be used in automobile industry in
near future.
CONCLUSION
• Any set of diameter with any profile and skew
shaft too can be used, but it should have
rotation about it’s own axis.
• Both the driving and the driven gear should
run on the same rpm.
• With the help of this system, we can efficiently
reduce the cost in power and transmission
and can bring a revolution.
