A SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN

IN GENERAL BIOLOGY-I
I. Objective:

At the end of the lesson, the students

should be able to:
A. Describe the structure and function
of major and subcellular organelles
(STEM_BIO11/12-Ia-c-2)
II. Subject Matter:
A. Topic: CELL STRUCTURE AND
FUNCTIONS
B. Reference: Phoenix Next Century
Series Biological Science pp: 62-68
C. Teaching Materials: TV,
Whiteboard and marker, Chalk,
Pictures, PPT presentation
III. Procedure:

A. ACTIVITY: SCRAMBLED CELL

II. Subject Matter:

1. The class will be divided into two

groups and shall pick a representative.
2. Scrambled letters will be flashed on
the screen and the students should
guess what term is it.
3. Answers shall be written on the

B. ANALYSIS

1. Discuss the parts and

functions of cell organelles
The cell is the basic unit of life. Our
body is made up of millions and billions
of them. A cell is like a tiny system.
Inside the cell are organelles with
different functions. Among these
organelles are: nucleus, mitochondria,
Golgi bodies, cell membrane, cytoplasm,
endoplasmic reticulum, lysosome.
Cell Membranes serves as the gate of a cell. It
serves as the entrance and exit of materials inside the
cell. Cytoplasm holds the organelles in place.
Nucleus is the control center of the cell and contains
the DNA. Endoplasmic Reticulum is the “highway”
of the cell that moves materials around to other parts.
Golgi apparatus packages, stores, and secretes
materials to different location inside/outside of the
cell. Lysosomes clean up the cell waste products.
Mitochondrion the powerhouse of the cell.
C. ABSTRACTION

1. The students will

identify the parts of the
cell in the picture:
2. What is the difference
between rough ER and smooth
ER? What is the ER doing
that is different in each case?
3. What are lysosomes? What types of
molecules would be found inside a
lysosome?
4. Compare and contrast the fuctions of
smooth & rough endoplasmic reticulum
5. After identifying the parts, the teacher
will let the students explain how important
all the organelles inside the cell to function
as one.
D. APPLICATION: 3-D Cell Model Construction

1. The class will be divided into five

groups and each group will be
assigned on cell organelle they will
construct. Using any material they
have on hand, the students will create
their assign model within 20 minutes.
After the time given, the teacher will
choose the best model.
GROUP 1- CELL WALL
GROUP 2- CELL
MEMBRANE
GROUP 3- NUCLEUS
GROUP 4- SMOOTH &
ROUGH ER
GROUP 5- MITOCHONDRIA
3D CELL MODEL- RUBRICS
CREATIVENESS & 50 %
DESIGN
MATERIALS 25 %
COOPERATION 10 %
ORGANIZATION 15 %

TOTAL 100 %
2. The teacher will ask the
students on what values they
have internalized in the group
activity and how will they
apply in their daily lives
IV. EVALUATION: The Cell as a City Activity
A. Floating around in the cytoplasm are small
structures called organelles. Like the organs in your
own body, each one carries out a specific function
necessary for the cell to survive. Imagine the cell as a
miniature city. The organelles might represent
companies, places or parts of the city because they
each have similar jobs. Below are the descriptions of
important parts of the Cell City.
B. The teacher will let the students to
analyze and match the important parts
of the city listed on the first page of this
packet to the specific organelles found
in cells. Be sure to write neatly, and in
complete sentences.
1. The nucleus is a large, round/oval structure usually located
near the center of the cell. It is the control center for all the
activities of the cell. a) What company or place does
the nucleus resemble in a Cell City? b) Why do you think so?
a) ______________________________________________
2. The cell membrane is a thin, flexible envelope that
surrounds the cell. It allows the cell to change shape and
controls what goes into and out of the cell. a) What company
or place does the cell membrane resemble in a Cell
City? b) Why do you think so?

a) _______________________________________________
3. The endoplasmic reticulum consist of a network of tube-like
passageways that proteins from the ribosomes are transported
through. Proteins are constructed at the ribosomes. a) What company
or place does the endoplasmic reticulum and ribosomes resemble in a
Cell City? b) Why do you think so?
a) __________________________________________________

4. The jelly-like area between the nucleus and the cell membrane is
called the cytoplasm. It helps organelles and materials move
throughout the cell. a) What company or place does
the cytoplasm resemble in a Cell City? b) Why do you think so?
a) __________________________________________________
