RCM DEFINITION

Reliability Centred Maintenance is a process used to determine what must

be done to ensure that any physical asset continues to fulfil its intended functions
in its present operating context.

No. 2
RCM OBJECTIVES

The main objective of RCM (Reliability Centered Maintenance) is to ensure that the

Right maintenance activity is performed at the right time with the right people, and

that the equipment is operated in away that maximizes its opportunity to achieve are

availability level that is consistent with the Safety, Environment, Operational, and

Profit goals of the company.

No. 3
GOAL OF RCM

• To manage failure CONSEQUENCES

• EX..
 Safety consequences.
 Environmental consequences.
 Operational consequences.
 Non-operational consequences.
 Hidden consequences.

• To minimize failure consequences adopting the right strategy with right resource
at right frequency.

No. 4
RCM BENEFITS

1. Maximize safety and environment integrity.

2. Increase uptime.

3. Optimize maintenance cost

4. Improved product quality.

5. Better Team work.

6. Increase knowledge.

7. Increase data for decision making

No. 5
RCM METHODOLOGY AND MAINTENANCE KPI
The purpose of maintenance is to prevent or mitigate the consequences of failure.
Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) is a method that allows to achieve this goal
in as effective way.

The Task categories are,

 PM – Preventive Maintenance
 CM – Condition Monitoring
 Inspection
 Function test
 Calibration
 Run to Fail

 Implementing the above recommendations will develop a comprehensive

equipment maintenance program.
 Identification of physical and procedural design.
 Greater maintenance cost-effectiveness.
 Identification of key training opportunities.
 Improve process knowledge across organization.
 Identification of assets that will be allowed to run to fail.

No. 6
IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER

1. Maintenance not for preserving Equipment.

2. Objective of maintenance is to manage the failure consequences.

3. The vast majority of asset failures are not related to age.

4. Reliability is every body responsibility.

5. Maintenance is a strategic initiative affecting all others areas.

6. RCM is not a project, it’s a program.

No. 7
IMPORTANT TO KNOW

• RCM is a proactive approach.

• RCM is not for rotating equipment only.

• RCM is a team approach

• RCM is not “one time task”

• Return of investment of RCM is guaranteed if its used and implemented correctly.

• RCM must become a part of the “organization’s culture”.
