INTRODUCTION

• Road accidents are an outcome of various factors such as length of road networks ,
vehicle population, human population and road safety regulations etc. Road safety
has become an issue of concern both at national and international levels.
• India is one of the highest motorization growths in the world accompanied by rapid
expansion of road networks. the analysis of road accidents show that in year 2016 it
was recorded 4,80,652 accidents, leading to 1,50,785 deaths.
• The number suggests that at least 413 people died everyday in 1,317 road
accidents.
• A Korean based company invented a new concept called the rolling barriers and it
was installed at two downgraded and curved roads in Busan, the accidents were
reduced by 50% in a year. this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of rolling
barriers and understand the rolling barriers features.

What is a barrier?

Barrier or guard rails are structures that keep vehicles within their
road way and prevent vehicles from colliding with dangerous
obstacles .
FUNCTION OF A BARRIER

• Roadside barriers are used to protect traffic from roadside

obstacles or hazards.
• Median barriers are used to prevent vehicles from crossing over
and colliding with on coming vehicles.
• Bridge barriers are used to restrain vehicles from falling off the
bridge.
• Work zone barriers are used to protect traffic from hazards in
work zones.
ROLLING BARRIERS

• Created by a Korean company

called KSI( Korean safety
innovation)
• The rolling barrier has both
stiffness and flexibility to
withstand collisions unlike usual
barriers.
• Urethane has become the
material of choice to produce
rollers due to its extraordinary
physical and mechanical
properties.
FEATURES

• Made of special chemical compound like hard rubber

(urethane).
• Easy to maintain due to separated barrels (recyclable).
• Stopper boards installed on top and lower parts of the
barrels to guide the vehicles back to the road.
• Easy to adjust height , noticeable to drivers due to
noticeable coloration.
• Costs less to install.

HOW THE BARRIERS WORK

• Roller absorbs collision shock

(shock energy –rotational
energy).
• Front rail absorbs second
shock.
• Back rail absorbs the third
shock.
• Metal pipe is inserted to
strengthen the post.
TEST PERFORMANCE
PROBLEMS

1) COST :- Compared to other types of barriers like

reinforced concrete, this rolling barrier is made up of
urethane which costs less, but urethane resources are
less compared to concrete.
2) HEAT TREATMENT :- At high temperatures the rubber
characteristic feature is that it tends to low resistance property,
but can be maintained by monthly inspection.
IMPLEMENTATIONS

• Can be installed in curved road

sections
EX:- NH22 (highway to hell) is
considered India’s most
dangerous highway.
• Ramps in city or state or
national highway.
• Medians and entrances and exit
ramps in parking garages.
CONCLUSION

• Accidents are the errors of humans while using motor vehicles and
also nature creates problems like rain causing slippery roads.
• Ultimately life is more precious then vehicles but when it comes
to rolling barrier system usage, it saves life and also prevents
maximum damage to the vehicles.
• Rolling barriers will not only reduce the impact of collision but
also help in redirecting to the actual path, by converting impact
energy into rotational energy.
