Heat exchangers are devices that facilitate the heat exchange between two fluids
that are at different temperatures and avoid mixing at the same time each.
In practice, heat exchangers are commonly used in a wide variety of applications,
from the systems domestic heating and air conditioning until the chemical
processes and the production of energy in plants big.
In an exchanger heat transfer usually includes convection in each fluid and
conduction through the wall that separates it
Compact heat exchanger
It is designed specifically to achieve a large surface area heat transfer per
unit volume
The ratio between the heat transfer surface area of a exchanger and its
volume is called area density β.
A heat exchanger with β> 700 m 2 / m 3 (or 200 ft. 2 / ft 3) classifies as
compact.
How does this work
The compact exchangers allow to achieve high reasons of heat transfer between two fluids
in a small volume and are commonly used in applications with strict limitations with
regarding the weight and volume of those devices
The large surface area in the compact exchangers is gets holding thin plates or corrugated
fins with little space between them to the walls that separate the two fluids.
Compact heat exchangers are commonly used in the heat transfer from gas to gas and
gas to liquid (or liquid to gas), to counteract the low coefficient of heat transfer associated
with the flow of gases through a greater surface area
In compact exchangers the two fluids are usually move perpendicular to each other and to
that configuration flow is known as cross-flow, which is still classifies more as unmixed or
mixed flow, depending of your configuration, as shown in the figure
