Assessment
● Children and adolescents are at an increased risk of developing
dental caries, especially in lower socioeconomic communities.
Reasons include:
○ Diet and sugar intake (Wisconsin Dental Association, n.d.)
○ Lack of regular dental visits and oral hygiene knowledge (Washington DOH, n.d.)
○ Increased tobacco use in lower SES communities (Simon, Camenga, Kong,
Connell, Morean, Cavallo, & Krishnan-Sarin, 2017)
● Target population: James Taylor High School in Belfair, WA
● 71% of the students are economically disadvantaged, therefore,
are eligible for the Free/Reduced Lunch Program and have a
graduation rate of only 38% (U.S. News, n.d.).
Diagnosis
● The prioritization of the needs for our target population is as
follows:
○ The importance of maintaining oral health and scheduling regular dental visits.
○ The importance of diet and the effect sugar has on teeth.
○ The negative effects tobacco has on the oral cavity.
● Partners within the community:
○ Pam White and other administrators at James Taylor High School
○ Mason County Public Health Department (Mason County, Community Services,
n.d.)
● Target Population: Students of James Taylor High School
○ About 50 students total
○ One 30-40 minute long
Planning

Implementation
Overall Experience:

● James Taylor High School is not open Fridays, unable

to present. Alternative location, 6th grade class at Post
Middle School in Arlington, WA.
● 30 minute presentation with pre/post-tests over 7 class
periods.
● Expected 180 6th graders, in actuality saw about 250.
● Kept original objectives, with slight change in
presentation to be more age friendly.

Our presentation:

● Powerpoint, tobacco video, brush & floss demo, pH

testing of beverages, Q & A.
Pre-
and
Post-Test
Statistical Analysis
● Dependent Variables
○ Student’s Dental IQ
○ Scores on Pre- and Post-Tests

● Independent Variables
○ Group Presentation
○ Pre- and Post-Tests

● Extraneous Variables
○ Change in target population (school)
○ Additional classes added
○ Shortened class time due to an assembly
Formative Evaluation
● Adjustment of the presentation/demonstration speed

● Practicing the speech length of each presenter would have

been helpful to create a better flow

● Confusion caused by the pre- and post-test being on the

same paper

● An insufficient amount of take-home bag supplies due to

multiple added classes to the audience
Summative Evaluation
● Being aware of our audience size so a proper amount of take-home bag supplies could have been
gathered, asking for donated items earlier

● Practicing our presentation several times to account for demonstration time and audience
participation

● Doing the presentation with smaller group sizes would help with audience attention and ability to
participate in demonstrations

OVERALL..
Very successful and could be easily repeated
or continued with a few minor changes!
