Parks
A park is an area of natural, semi-
natural or planted space set aside for
human enjoyment and recreation and
for the protection of wildlife and natural
habitat.
It may consist of grassy
areas, rocks, soil and trees
but may also contain buildings
and other artifacts such as
monuments, fountains or
playground structure.
Natural parks
Are relatively large reserved
areas not materially altered by
human activity where extractive
resource uses are not allowed and
maintained to protect outstanding
natural or international significance
for scientific, educational and
recreational use.
Natural Parks in
the Philippines:
Apo Reef in Occidental Mindoro
Balinsasayao Twin Lake- Negros
Oriental
Mayon Volcano Natural Park- Albay
Mt. Kitanglad Range- Bukidnon
Northern Sierra Madre- Isabela
Tubbataha Reef- Palawan
Man-made Parks
Parks which are made
artificially or altered by humans.
Usually for recreation and
beautification of places.

Baguio Botanical Park- Baguio
San Agustin Botanical Park- Tagum

Value
Parks: Environmental Value
 Healthy Habitats
Parks of all sizes play an important role in
preserving and supporting healthy
environments. A network of parks and open
spaces that include protected natural lands,
ecological reserves, wetlands, and other green
areas is critical to providing healthy habitats for
humans, wildlife and plants in these densely
built places. Natural landscapes are vital to
preserving regional ecosystems and growing
cities.
Parks: Environmental Value
 Reducing Carbon Footprints
Parks also help create human and energy
efficient cities that are the best hope for slowing
global warming. Linear parks and open spaces
make compact living attractive and feasible. Every
tree helps fight global warming by reducing the
amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
By absorbing carbon dioxide and pollutants fueling
climate change, parks and green infrastructure
offset the warming effects on cities, making them
cooler.
Parks: Environmental Value
 Measurable Benefits
Park’s value is calculated through cleaner
air and water that improve public health and
reduced maintenance costs. Trees, shrubs and
vegetation purify the air of gases, ozone, and
pollutants that cause respiratory problems and
corrode and damage buildings.
Parks: Environmental Value
Tree canopies, garden vegetation, grassy
areas, and other green spaces in parks
capture and filter rainwater, reducing the
amount of oil, salt, and pollutants flowing
from roads and lawns into nearby waterways.
Parks also conserve vulnerable coastal and
flood zone areas reducing the loss of life from
storms and surges.
Nature
Reserves
Nature Reserves
area set aside for the purpose of
preserving certain animals, plants or
both. A nature reserve differ from
national park usually in being
smaller and having as its sole
purpose the protection of nature.
Endangered species are
often kept in reserves away
from hunters who brought
them close to extinction.
Strict Nature reserves in the
Philippines:
is an area possessing some
outstanding ecosystem features and/or
species of flora and fauna of national
scientific importance maintained to
protect nature and maintain process in
an undisturbed state
in order to have ecologically
representative examples of the
natural environment available
for scientific study,
environmental monitoring,
education and for the
maintenance of genetic
resources in a dynamic and
evolutionary state.

Philippines
Calauit Safari Park- Palawan
Mt. Calavite and FB Harrison-
Occidental Mindoro
Lake Buluan- Cotabato
Lake Malimanga -
Zamboanga
Olango Island-Cebu
Palawan
Why do we need
Nature Reserves?
- Is to protect our
biodiversity- the degree
variation of life . A sufficient
biodiversity is required to keep
our ecosystem in natural
balance.
With the sufficient
biodiversity, the loss of any part
of the food chain will not lead to
a serious disruption and effects
on the other organisms as they
can obtain nutrients in other
ways.
If not, any disruption in the
food chain will lead to a stop in
the nutrient cycle path and the
collapse of the whole
ecosystem over time.
Also it allows a large gene
pool to be conserved so that it
can serve as an invaluable
resource for future usage.
As the needs of the worlds
population are ever changing,
the vast gene pool that we
conserved and using technique
such as cross-breeding or even
genetic manipulation,
researches can invent and
cultivate new food sources for
our consumption.
wilderness
Wilderness
-Is a natural environment on Earth
that has not been significantly
modified by human activity.
-or the most intact undisturbed wild
areas left on planet-those last truly
wild places that humans do not
control and have not developed with
roads, pipelines or other industrial
infrastructures.
Wilderness Characteristics:
1.Naturalness:
the area generally appears to have
been affected primarily by the forces of
nature, with the imprint of man’s work
substantially unnoticeable.
2. Outstanding Opportunities:
the area has either outstanding
opportunities, or outstanding opportunities
for primitive and unconfined types of
recreation.
3. Size:
the area is at least 5,000 acres for
land or is of sufficient size as to make
practicable its preservation and use in an
unimpaired conation.
4.Values:
the area may also contain
ecological, geological or other features of
scientific, educational, scenic or historical
value.
Climate: Wilderness
The climate in wilderness is warm
and temperate. There is significant
rainfall throughout the year in
wilderness. The average temperature is
17.4◦c. The rainfall here averages 662
mm.
Wilderness
Areas in the
Philippines
Alibijaban- Quezon
Awasan Bay Islands-
Surigao del Norte
Bantayan Island- Cebu
Basot-Quinalang
Malabungot Islands-
Camarines Sur
Chaniago Strait Islands-
Bohol
Cebu Strait Islands- Bohol
Why we should
protect wilderness?
There are many reasons we need
to protect wilderness:
Wilderness protects
watersheds that provide clean
drinking water to surrounding
communities.
Wilderness filters and cleans
the air we breathe.
Many animals we love call
wilderness their home.
People depend on wilderness
for their favorite recreation
opportunities, such as: nature
walking, wildlife watching,
hiking, hunting, fishing,
canoeing and camping.
Thank you for
paying attention
