Participatory Action Reasearch

The role of teacher research:

 to understand better what is happening in the classroom

 to find a solution for my puzzle
 it contributes positively to life of the students and the teacher’s life
 to develop further understanding of my research
 to involve the participants into the puzzle and; consequently, make them feel aware
that they are a part of the puzzle and feel responsible for that
 involving partcipants will inegrate the group
What is my understanding of the teacher research?

- Action research helped me to improve my teaching skills

- Action research helped me to find ways how to intevene to a
problematic situation
Context:

 2nd graders
 There is one child whose native language is English
 12 students (9 boys, 3 girls)
What is the experience/experiences that lead towards your question/ puzzle?

The school in which I conduct my internships, is the private

school. There are a few boys who tend not to behave properly, among
others they want others to pay attention to them and they misbehave
by chatting together all the time. What is more, there are also
misunderstandings between themselves. Some children don’t like each
other, so instead to listening to their teacher, they quarrel during the
classess between themselves.
What is my puzzle?

- how to deal with classroom management, especially with the

learner who is a native speaker and doesn’t want to cooperate with
other learners?
What have you done to narrow down your question/puzzle?

 I talked with my mentor teacher. Her opinion was that „these children are very particular. You have
to know what to expect from them”. You have to be demanding and you have to know what to
expect from them”
 They will not be disciplined, if the teacher doesn’t impose on them strict rules related to
maintaining classroom discipline
What are the ways of collecting data to better understand your puzzle?

Different activities, helping to maintain discipline in the classroom.

 a contract concerning classroom rules(the teacher explains the rules in a behavioural way,
concerning treating others, communicating with others as well as making children aware
of the consequences of their behaviour)
 reminding students of the classroom rules in case they would forget about „a contract
with the teacher”;
 Thinking about the division of students into the groups also matters, for example, the
change of places so that each students do not sit next to someone they like chatting with
What are the ways of collecting data to better understand my puzzle?

 One of the ways of calming students down is using, so-called: „ magic

hand” that is a special plastic hand on a stick which checks if each student is
ready to the lesson
 it also helps when the teacher starts saying something and at the same time
whispers

 non-verbal clues: ringing the bell, clapping the hands rhytmically

What are the ways of collecting data to better understand my puzzle?

 non-verbal clues: ringing the bell, clapping the hands rhytmically

which relies on reducing the rhytm to clapping with the use of both
hands until the gesture of silent clapping
 using direct questions, such as: whatn are you doing now? What
should you do now? What rule do we have concerning „this” ot
„that”
 another important thing which should be taken into consideration is
uncovering the goal of student’s behaviour; some students misbehave
on purpose because they want the teacher to draw his or her attention
to them
What is my puzzle?

 How to deal with classroom management?

The ways of collecting data to better understand my puzzle:

 To introduce more activities which are engaging for children because there are almost no
activities on my classess which cover the use of movement, most of the things sitting on
the chairs which may be boring for the learners and: consequently, that is why they are
disturbing
 recording my classess is a good idea to reconsider once again at home the children’s
behaviour and making notes about each student’s bahaviour, the ways of interaction with
the other students in the group
What can I do to solve the puzzle?

 - meeting with parents( did he have similar problems being in the native environment?)
 - do they have some discipline problems at home?
 -does he attend any extra classess? How does he behave on this classess?

 Meeting with the student:

 -wha kind of activities does he like to do?
 - what is he inerested in?
 -does he have any problems with his classmates?
 Meeting with the teacher:
 - does she notice the problem?
 -does she pay extra attention to the student?
 -Has she used any help, e.g. text books, etc.
Conclusions:

 - This matter/puzzle has not been fully solved; however, this student has
been moved to another school.
 - We can suppose that the reason of this situation was student’s uneagerness
to change his behaviour.
 - Additionally, teacher seemed to fail to solve the problem; it seems that
moving him to another school was the only effective solution. Teachers were
hopeless.
Literature review:

 In his book: „Classroom Behaviour. An Practical Guide to Effective Classroom

Management” Bill Rogers writes about the effective techniques of dealing with
classroom management
