Categories of Literature

Fiction Non- Fiction


• imaginary composed writing or • sits direct opposition to fiction
work of art that • could be creative or factual
• meant to provide information,
education, and enetertainment to
readers
Types of Fiction:
1. Drama : stories composed in verse or prose, for
theatrical performance
2. Mythology: often pertaining to the actions of gods
3. Fantasy: form mental image with strange or other
worldly settings or characters; suspension of reality
4. Humor: faculty of perceiving what is amusing or comical
- meant to entertain
5. Fable: animals often speak as humans that are
legendary and supernatural tales
6. Fairy Tales: "wonder tales" - kind of folktale or fable
7. Science Fiction: based on impact of potential science -
set in the future/ on other planets
8. Short Story: fiction of such briefness that is not able to
support any subplots
9. Realistic Fiction: can actually happen and is true to real
life
10. Folklore: songs, stories, myths, and proverbs of a
person of "folk"that was handad down by word of mouth
11. Historical Fiction: with fictional characters in historical
setting
12. Horror: literature that is frightfully shocking, terrifying, or
revolting; evokes feeling of dread
13. Legend: based on fact but also includes imaginative
material
14. Mystery: deals with a solution of crime or the
unraveling of secrets
