WHAT IS NOUN?

A noun is a part of speech that is used


to name a person, animal, place,
thing or event.

SINGULAR VS. PLURAL NOUN

Nouns can be singular or plural. The plural form of a


noun is usually formed by adding “s” at the end of the
noun.
Examples:
SINGULAR PLURAL
Toy Toys

Car Cars

Marble Marbles
There are exceptions to the rule. Some plurals
are irregular:

DIFFERENT TYPES OF NOUN

1. ABSTRACT NOUN – names an idea, event,


quality or concept.
Examples: ( Freedom, Love, Courage)

CONCRETE NOUN – a nouns which you can


touch, hear, smell, see and taste.
Examples: (Touch = Ball, Hear = Radio, Smell =
Flower, See = Television, Taste = Ice cream)
2. ANIMATE NOUN – refer to a person, animal
and other creature.
Examples: (Kitten, Elephants, Filipinos,
Grandmother, Man)

INANIMATE NOUN – refers to things that are not


alive.
Examples: (Tables, Chairs, Wood, Pen,
Notebook)
3. COLLECTIVE NOUN – Describes a group of
things or people as a unit.
Examples:
A flock of birds
A group of Guinea pigs
A bowl of rice
A cup of tea
A choir of singers
4. COMMON NOUN – Is the name of a group of similar things.
 PROPER NOUN – refer to the name of a single person, place or
thing.

5. COMPUND NOUN – refer to two or more nouns combined to
form a single noun.
Examples: (Grapefruit juice, sister-in-law, schoolteacher.)
 Some of the compound nouns are written with space
between two words, separated by the hyphen or as single
word.
Examples:
Orange juice = SPACE BETWEEN TWO WORDS
Mother-in-law = SEPARATED BY THE HYPHEN
Schoolboy = SINGLE WORD
 6. COUNTABLE (or Count) NOUN – are for things we can count using
numbers. They have a singular and plural form. In plural, these nouns
can be used with a number.
Examples: SINGULAR PLURAL
One dog Two dogs
One horse Two horses
One idea Two ideas

She has three dogs


I own a house
How many friends do you have?
UNCOUNTABLE (or Non Count) NOUN – are the things that we cannot count with
numbers. They maybe the names for abstract ideas or qualities or for physical
objects that are too small to be counted.

Examples: tea, sugar, water, air, rice.

There has been a lot of research into the causes of this disease
He did not have much sugar left
