Introduction
National Institute of Science & Technology

• Internal damping is quite complex phenomena, the system dynamics is really

difficult to describe.

• The internal damping of the system may cause instability in high speed rotors
due to the anti-symmetric circulating forces.

• There are lot of constructive efforts in designing control strategies to arrest

this instability.

• But due to complexity in dynamics resulting from the presence of

nonlinearities in rotating frame or due to difficulties in implementing
actuators in fixed reference frames it becomes quite challenging task for
designing controller to arrest vibration for small size rotors.

Aim of the project
National Institute of Science & Technology

• Rotating machines and its applications in industry directly affects the basic
economic issues and deals very closely with human life.
Therefore safe operation of this rotating machinery is an absolute necessity.

• Rotors at speeds higher than a certain threshold become unstable due to

rotating damping forces generated by dissipation in rotor material, couplings
or due to friction in tooltips.

• Similarly Hydrodynamic bearings go into a state of instability after a critical

speed tending to damage the equipment and rendering it inefficient.

The main Objective of this work is to Design an efficient Controller to

stabilize rotor-journal system of any given specification.

Advantage
National Institute of Science & Technology

• Eliminates shaft to bearing contact.

• It reduces bearing wear of for superior bearing life.

• Reduces shaft / bearing contact results in higher mechanical efficiency.

• Due to the formation of fluid film in bearing it supports very large

load.
