SALIVARY GLANDS

stroma
parenchyma
Stroma
Comprises the connective tissue components that support and
conveys the vascular and nerves supply .

Functioning mechanically, they provide a matrix that

connects and binds the cells and organs and ultimately
gives support to the body.
Structurally, connective tissue is formed by three classes of components:
cells, fibers, and ground substance.
It includes:

•Connective tissue capsule

Covers the gland and separates it from surrounding structure

•Connective tissue septae (trabeculae)

Arise from the capsule and divide the gland into lobes and smaller lobules

•Reticular stroma
Network of reticular connective tissue that support the secretory units of
the gland
PAROTID SALIVARY GLAND

1 - serous secretory units

2 - myoepithelial cells
4 - interlobular excretory duct
5 - interlobular connective tissue septa

Parenchyma
The parenchyma of an organ consists of those cells which
carry out the specific function of the organ and which usually
comprise the bulk of the organ.

The parenchyma include the secretory units structure and

duct system of the salivary glands

•Secretory units
 Acinus – unit structure formed of groups of secretory cells
surrounding a lumen and resting on a basal membrane

 The cells are separated from the basal lamina by modified

epithelial cell called the basket cell or the myoepithelial cell
submandibular gland parenchyma

bv = blood vessel
dem = serous demilune
around mucous acinus
muc = mucous acini
SD = secretory duct
ser = serous acini
Myoepithelial cell
•Flattened, branched cells
•Many processes that grasp the acinus like a basket
•The cytoplasm abundant in actin and myosin filaments
•Mediate contraction and squeeze the acinar secretion into the
duct
•They surround also the cell lining the duct system particularly the
intercalated ducts.
•The myoepithelial cells acquire a spindle shape and lie parallel to
the length of the duct.
SUBLINGUAL SALIVARY GLAND

2 - serous part (serous demilune) of mixed secretory unit
3 - serous secretory unit
4 - mucous secretory unit
5 - myoepithelial cells
PAROTID SALIVARY GLAND

1 - serous secretory units (acini)

2 - intercalated excretory duct
3 - striated excretory duct
4 - interlobular excretory duct
5 - interlobular connective tissue septa
