POWER AND RPM

Power Vs Speed
Power Vs Speed

• A engine power against speed envelope is as show in

the fig.
• The limits of the envelope are set by various factors.
• The most common limiting factors are as follows.
(a) Low load running
(b) Max Engine speed limit
(c) Surge or Smoke
(d) Limits of the turbocharger
Power Vs Speed
• Plants for naval ships to be designed to satisfy the highest speed
requirements, but max. power capability is seldom used.
• Majority of life naval ships operate at cruising speed .Naval ships mostly
run at apprx. 60% of max. speed
• As per propellar law
Power α N3
Power rating at 60% speed = (0.6Nmax)3 = 0.216 N3max= 21.6 % of P max
implies 20-30% propulsion power rating.
• Therefore economy at cruising speed is imp. & fuel consumption at this
speed controls the range of ship.
• Design of power plant must fully reflect the operating profile of a ship.
Engine ratings
• The ratings stated for an engine by its manufacture
reflects their confidence that the engine will perform
reliably at that level under specified conditions.
• A high performance rating is given to an engine for
warship application in which engine may be opearted
under conditions of sustained overload for limited
period of time but with reduced intervals between
overhauls.
Propulsion system
• The power produced at the prime
mover output shaft is equal to
the power delivered to the
propeller.
• The product of the engine output
torque and speed is equal to the
propeller torque and speed.
• The propeller power demand at
50% of max ship speed is only a
fraction of the power demand at
top speed.
Low-load Running
• As the power demanded from each cylinder falls, so too
does the temperature in the cylinder. At a certain
temperature, acids condense and can result in accelerated
corrosion.
• Second factor at low loads is that there can be poor
combustion, resulting in misfiring and increased formation of
carbon products of combustion. The carbon can build up on
various components eventually reducing the engine
performance.
• Third factor in turbocharged engines is that the inlet
manifold pressure can drop below the pressure in the
cylinder when the inlet v/v is open
Limiting Factors

• The area contained within the envelope and the

limiting factors vary between engine to engine.
Max Engine speed limit
• In a engine power can be ed by ing speed.
• Which will be limited by , factors like
(a) limits on balancing of the rotating and
reciprocating components.
(b) limits due to increased stresses leading to
component failure.
(c) The higher gas flow rates limits the piston
speed and valve speed.
