WHERE DO DRUGS COME
FROM?
Drugs come from two sources: nature or laboratories.
Antibiotics, such as penicillin, come from either bacteria or
fungi. Penicillin is the same as the blue gray mold on bread.
Digitalis, which is a drug for the heart, comes from poisonous
leaves of the purple foxglove plant. Morphin, a drug which
kills pain, comes from opium poppy. Insullin is another
important drug that diabetic people use. It helps their bodies to
use the sugar from their food. It comes from pigs or sheep.
Synthetic drugs are made in the laboratory. Two examples are
aspirin and the sulfa drugs. Tranquilizer make people calm
and less tense. Sedatives help people sleep. Where ever they
come from, drugs are useful chemicals.
