1937- Set Up of Government Tourist board to help
large volume of passengers sailing in Sri Lanka.
However, it ceased operations during the start of World War II
1948- The Government realized that Tourism has an
impact to the economy , they realized that Tourism existed way back before
1966- Government decided to develop tourism in a
planned and systematic manner after identifying the need to set up an institution and institutional framework - Ceylon Tourist Board was established - Ceylon Hotels Corporation was set up duly -Ceylon Hotel School and School of Tourism was established by the Ceylon Tourism Board 2005-SRI LANKA TOURISM ACT NO. 38 was established. -Conversion of Ceylon Hotel School and School of Tourism to Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management - One of its objectives is to provide guidance to the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management.
2007-SRI LANKA TOURISM ACT NO. 38 came into
effect. 2011- According to the Tourism Development Strategies of the Ministry of Economic development .The government will improve productivity of the tourism industry, through building professionalism in the travel and hotel industries. The private sector will be encouraged to set up world renowned human resource development centers to meet the emerging needs of the tourism industry locally and abroad. Hotel management and tourism promotion subjects will be provided in the curriculum of university academic programs. Simultaneously, the government will extend maximum support to the private sector training institutions with a view to maintaining the standards of services. Licensing of tour guides in order to standardize their service (through a competency test) and accreditation of travel agents will be undertaken. 2011- Increase of Tourist arrivals with a growth of 45.7% compared to the previous year. With tourist receipt amounting USD 840 million from USD 576 million
2012- Growth of 15% of Tourist arrivals from the
previous years. - Set up of Provincial Colleges of SLITHM in Anaradhapura and Kandy
2016- Marks a Golden Milestone for Sri Lanka
Tourism with the Grand Celebration of its 50th Anniversarry 2011- Increase of Tourist arrivals with a growth of 45.7% compared to the previous year. With tourist receipt amounting USD 840 million from USD 576 million
2012- Growth of 15% of Tourist arrivals from the
previous years. - Set up of Provincial Colleges of SLITHM in Anaradhapura, Kandy and other provinces.
2016- Marks a Golden Milestone for Sri Lanka
Tourism with the Grand Celebration of its 50th Anniversary - Launch of unique courses in SLITHM like Certified Hospitality Finance and Management Accountant Professional Qualification SLITHM (Sri Lanka Institute of Hotel Management) - Only school in Sri Lanka that offers Hospitality and Tourism Courses that is recognized by the Government. - Sri Lanka Tourism has been over dependent on SLITHM to educate and train hotel staffs - Over the years SLITHM focus on training personnel for top and middle management position in the industry supplemented with short course program - SLITHM and its satellite schools currently have an output of 2500 graduates every year, which indicates that over dependence on the SLITHM to train majority of new tourism workers. CURRENT TRENDS OF TOURISM EDUCATION: -Apart from the SLITHM, hospitality education in Sri Lanka is supported by only a handful of other hospitality schools, which are all small in size. One of these is the Imperial Institute of Hospitality and Leisure (IIHL), which is delivering the Institute of Hospitality’s Diploma in Management for International Hospitality and Tourism.
-However, there has also been a rapid growth of
unregulated hotel staff training institutes in and around the major cities.
