MECHATRONICS

 “The synergistic combination of precision mechanical

engineering, electronic control and systems thinking in
the design of products and manufacturing processes”

 “Integration of electronics, control engineering and

mechanical engineering”

 The interdisciplinary field of engineering dealing with the

design of products whose function relies on the
synergistic integration of mechanical and electronic
components co-ordinated by a control architecture."
EVOLUTION LEVELS OF MECHATRONICS
 1. Primary level Mechatronics: incorporates l/O devices - sensors, and
actuators - integrates electrical signals with mechanical action at basic
control level.
 Examples: Electrically controlled fluid valves and relays.
 2. Secondary level Mechatronics: integrates microelectronics into
electrically controlled devices.
 Example : Cassette player.
 3. Third level Mechatronics: incorporates advanced feed back functions
into control strategy “Smart system”. The control strategy includes
microelectronics, microprocessor and other 'Application Specific Integrated
Circuits' (ASIC).
 Examples: Control of electrical motor - industrial robots, hard disk, CD
drives, automatic washing machines.
 4. Fourth level Mechatronics : incorporates intelligent control in
mechatronic system. It introduces intelligence and Fault Detection and
Isolation (FDI) capability systems.

SEQUENTIAL CONTROLLERS

 When the control is strictly ordered in a time or

event driven sequence
 Control may be obtained by electrical circuits by
operating relays or CAM operated switches
 Now done by software programming in
microprocessor
 Ex. Washing machine - no. of operations has to
be carried out in sequential order
WASHING MACHINE - CYCLES

 Pre wash cycle – washed with cold water

 Main wash cycle - washed with hot water

 Rinse cycle

 Spinning
PRE WASH CYCLE

 Valve opening – fill the drum

 Close the valve

 Switching on the drum motor

– speed – time
 Pump to empty the water from

drum…..
