History of engineering mechanics
The application of mechanical eng.
Can be seen in the archieves of
various ancient and medieval
societies. In ancient Greece,the
work of archimedes(287-212BC)
influenced mechanics in the
western addition and Heron and
Alexandria(10-70AD) created the
first steam engine (Aeolipile).In
china,Zhang Heng(78-139AD)
improved a water clock and
invented a Seismometer.
During the islamic golden age (7th-15th)century,
muslim inventors made remarkable contributions
in the mechanical technology Al-Jazari, who was
one of them wrote his famous book of knowledge
of ingenious mechanical devices in 1206 and
presented many mechanical designs. Al-jazari is
also the first person to create devices such as the
CRANKSHAFT and CAMSHAFT, which now form the
basics of many mechanisms.

ENGINEERING MECHANICS
• Engineering mechanics involves the
application of the principles of mechanics to
solve real time engineering problems.
Types of ENG. Mechanics
• Static
• Dynamic
STATIC: Static is the branch of mechanics that
deals with the study of objects at rest.Objects
at rest may or may not be under the
influence of forces.
DYNAMIC: Dynamics is the branch of mechanics
that deals with the study of objects in motion
and the forces causing such motion.
Types of Dynamic
• Kinematics
• Kinetics
KINEMATICS: is the study of motion of bodies
without considering the forces acting on them it
deals with the space time relationship of the
motion of the body .E.g; velocity, displacement,
acceleration etc.
KINETICS: it is the branch of dynamics which deals
with the study of motion of bodies by
considering the forces acting on them.
SYSTEM OF FORCES
• Coplanar forces
• Concurrent forces
• Collinear forces
• Coplanar concurrent forces
• Coplanar non-concurrent forces
1-COPLANAR FORCES
Coplanar force system
have all the forces acting
in one plane.
2- Co-linear forces: The forces whose line of action lie
on the same line are known as co-linear forces.
3- Concurrent forces: The forces which meet at one
point, are known as concurrent forces.
4- Coplanar concurrent forces: Forces which meet at
one point and lines of action also lie on the same
plane are known as coplanar concurrent forces.
5- Coplanar non-concurrent forces: The force whose
line of action lie on the same plane but they do
not meet at one point are known as coplanar non-
concurrent forces.
