Old ISTE Standards for Teachers

The standards were implemented for educators when the

focus was on supporting learning with technology which
include a list of skills and attitudes expected of teacher which
in turn would be transferred to students.

A framework for educators and administrators to rethink

education and create innovative learning environments using
technology.
Old ISTE Standards for Teachers

Facilitate engage students in exploring real-world issues using digital tools and
resources.

Design and develop digital age learning experiences and assessments: Teachers should
Model and facilitate effective use of current digital tools to support research and
learning.

Model digital age work and learning: Teacher. Demonstrate fluency in technology systems
and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations.

Promote digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of
technology and information. Engage in professional growth and leadership

Evaluate and reflect on current research and professional practice on a regular basis to
effective use of existing and emerging digital tools and in support of student learning.
NEW ISTE Standards for Educators (2017)

The new standards are divided into our two roles as teachers:
the empowered professional and the learning catalyst.

Empowering ourselves means immersing ourselves in the new and

myriad forms of technology in the classroom.

Learning catalyst means opening up these experiences for each

student, designing, demonstrating and assessing for maximum
effectiveness.
THE EMPOWERED PROFESSIONAL

1. Teachers must explore new pedagogical approaches and

advocate for ways to implement these in the school
community
2. Teachers must create a learning culture for how to use
technology wisely and responsibly, concerning themselves
with creating an model digital citizen
3. Teachers should model for each other how to use digital
resources and properly manage personal data.
LEARNING CATALYST

1. Teachers must collaborate with teachers and students, and

even parents, to create the most authentic learning
experiences.
2. Teachers must make use of all features of technology to
differentiate instruction and accommodate each learner’s
needs.
3. Teachers must use technology for a variety of assessments
and utilize the assessment data productively.
Similarities Between the Two Sets of Standards
● Digital Citizenship
○ Legal and ethical behavior; positively contribute to and responsibly participate
in the digital world

● Design Digital Activities

○ Relevant, customized/personalized learning activities; authentic learning
experiences that foster independent learning

● Professional Growth
○ Model lifelong learning, reflect and evaluate on current research; Advance a
shared technology vision, advocate for equitable access to technology

● Inspire Student Creativity

○ Engage students, promote student reflection; model and nurture creativity,
foster a culture where students take ownership of their learning
Differences Between the Two Sets of Standards
● The new ISTE standards are broken down more specifically based on the roles that
leaders in educational technology should play.
○ “Teacher” vs. “Educator”

● The new ISTE standards place an emphasis on educators modeling the process for
identifying, evaluating, and adopting new digital resources for one another.

● The new ISTE standards place an emphasis on educating students about the importance of
protecting personal data and their digital identity.

● The new ISTE standards place a heavier emphasis than the old standards on the
importance of collaboration
○ Old: Collaborate to support student success and innovation
○ New: Collaborate with colleagues, collaborate and co-learn with students to
discover new digital resources, expose students to collaborative tools,
demonstrate cultural competency when interacting with stakeholders, as co-
collaborators in student learning.
Which standards work best for today’s teachers?

The ISTE standards have evolved to better reflect the role of

technology today. The new standards expand on the roles the teacher
plays in facilitation, usage, and growth of technology in a school
building.

While the old ISTE standards had 5 sections (or roles), the new
standards add the role of Collaborator and Designer, which were
previously bundled with the old standards’ Facilitator.

The Citizen role has evolved to better address today’s needs .

How roles have evolved:

Facilitator ● Managing both digital platforms and makerspaces.

● Facilitate opportunities for students to solve
problems creatively through technology.

Collaborator ● Interacting with students, parents, and colleagues -

everyone is a co-collaborator in student learning.
● Engage virtually with experts local and global.

Designer ● A new focus on creating learner-driven activities.

● Word-choices better portray the number of platforms
students have access to: image-editing/creating,
podcasting, filming, etc.
