INTRODUCTION
• Flooding is a temporary overflow of water onto land
that is normally dry.
• Floods are the most common natural disaster in the
world.
• Floods may: result from rain, snow, coastal storms,
storm surges, and overflows of dams and other water
systems.
• The destruction of a dam or levee is often brought on
by another natural disaster, such as a hurricane,
cyclone, or earthquake, etc.
PROCESS OF FLOODS IN LONDON

• Intense heavy rainfall is not unusual during the

summer, but in 2007 the frequency and spatial extent
was unprecedented.
• The most affected region was England, especially the
southern parts, although Licolnshire and Yorkshire in
the north of England, Wales (especially the south)
Northern Ireland and Scotland (especially the
Lowlands), were also badly affected.
• The Met Office says 414.1mm of rain fell across
England and Wales in May, June and July.
 Date 1 June – 25 July
2007
 Location United Kingdom
 Death 13
 Damage about £ 6.5 billion
• The heavy rain caused widespread flooding. In late
June it brought chaos to parts of north-east and
central England and a month later, to parts of central
and southern England and Wales.
• June was the wettest on record in the UK and July the
fourth-wettest.
• The combined effect of so many days of seemingly
endless rain was to make 2007 the UK's wettest
summer on record.
• 2007 - 362.1mm
• 1927 - 336.3mm
• 1956 - 358.4mm
