TOILET

DEFINITION
• The term ‘toilet’ refers to the user interface with the sanitation
system, where excreta is captured, and can incorporate any type of
toilet seat or latrine slab, pedestal, pan or urinal. The superstructure
of the toilet may be a stand-alone structure, or the toilet may be
located within a building (e.g. private house, a school, health care
facility, work place or other public setting).

CLASSIFICATION

• Sanitary Toilets – a water sealed toilet


system, where there is a water barrier
between the appliance and the sewers to
prevent sewer gas from entering the
room/building. The superstructure is
built with concrete materials that will last
for several years.

toilet system, but the superstructure is
not built completely with concrete
materials. The walls and the roof of the
superstructure is made either of wood
or nipa.

receiving space.

• Safe sanitation is essential for health, from preventing infection to improving and
maintaining mental and social well-being. The lack of safe sanitation systems leads
to infection and disease.
