Ergonomics

Design of Cash Payment Counter

Definition of Ergonomics
 The application of scientific
information concerning human
anatomy to the design of objects,
tools and systems for human use.
 Applied science of equipment
design to maximize efficiency &
productivity by reducing operator
fatigue and discomfort.
Problem:
Cash Payment Counter.
 Cash payment counters serves as the
point of sale in any retail business
 Cashiers are required to stay standing
at their stations for prolonged periods.
 It is a common problem for cashiers to
have muscle aches and discomfort due
to the unergonomical design of the
workplaces.
 By improving the design of the
payment counters, cashiers will not tire
easily, efficiency will be improved
resulting in faster sales processing time
and ultimately happy customers.
Sketch of Current Design
Problems Identified
 Work has to be kept at elbow height to
prevent arms from tiring.
 Cashiers would preferably stand straight and
occasionally sit on a stool to maintain a good
posture. Situations that require bending
forward or backward and twisting to the sides
should be avoided.
 Placing feet on a footrest or any other support
would promote comfort.
 Surfaces with hard or sharp edges must be
avoided to prevent injuries to the wrist.
 For work sitting down, a backrest on the stool
should provide ample support to further
enforce a straight posture.
