Problem and Mission
Problem
 People don´t come to school
enthusiastically. The don´t look forward to
one more day of school and are probably
tired of early rising.
Solution

 Use a robot in the lobby to jazz up the

entrance and spread a positive feeling
through disco music. This feeling can last
throughout the day, giving a better
scholar performance.
Elías Pastoressa Lobato
Hi there, I am Elías Pastoressa
Lobato. My nickname is
angeldelinfierno4567, but you can
call me Angel, if you want. I love to
listen to metal because that’s my
favorite genre, although my favorite
group is KISS (rock). I would like to
study cinematography, become a
director and be famous all over the
world. During my free time I play
one of the most famous MMORPG
(known as World of Warcraft) and I
also enjoy making my own videos
which I upload onto my account in
YouTube
(

Oliver Ochoa García
Hi, my name is Oliver Ochoa. I’m a 17-year-
old student who studies in Las Hayas School.
I have developed a fascination for 2 things:
cooking and robots. This fascination has led
me to a variety of jobs where I´ve tried to
enhance my abilities. Some of my most
distinguished work has been done in a
catering company where I worked as a
waiter, maitre and head chef. This
experience not only let me feel how cooking
careers worked but also let me develop a
vast ability of leadership. My abilities in
robotics, although not as developed as my
cooking ones, have been honed as well. I am
taking a course in school from a renowned
teacher from Cornell University where my
abilities in robotics and business are put to
test. All in all, I’m an over-average student
with very different interests which I wish to
one day fuse.
Eric R. Gulson Castillo
How do you do? I’m Eric, also seventeen and
in my senior year in high school. I am a
fanatical birdwatcher with over 500 species
seen, my latest new “lifer” being a Black-
chinned Sparrow. I enjoy taking bird
photographs but only through the digiscope
method (using a digital camera brought up to
a spotting scope, they tend to come out of
focus). I enjoy playing the flute and am also
(somewhat unsuccessfully, due to
schoolwork) trying to read three books (one
by Twain, the others on birds). Due to my love
of birds, I plan on dedicating my life to their
conservation. Therefore, I want to study a
conservation oriented career (such as Natural
Resources) in the university as to give me a
head start. As for working experience, I’ve
been a field guide in odd jobs, showing
people where our feathery friends are.
So long!

Carlos E. Lomeli Uribarri
Hello, my greatest pleasures

include being with my friends and

family, I am a friendly guy. I am a
collector, I have all sorts of things
ranging from liquor and perfume
bottles to garbage. I want to study
civil or industrial engineering, and
I like practicing all kind of sports.
Project Management Phases
Getting the product ready for the market. Giving it a slogan,

Deployment
Discovery
Our task was quite clear from the
beginning: we were to make a
dancing robot. We decided that we
wanted the robot to dance to disco
music and present it in the entrance
hall. We then defined our problem
and mission, which basically say that
we want to cheer people up, as many
don’t look forward to another school
day, and spread a good mood before
classes start, perhaps improving
academic performance. We then
investigated on the existence of
other dancing robots, as well as the
history of music and dance. This was
to give us background information to
base our project upon.
Design
During this phase

we had to come

up with an idea of

what we would build. Firstly, we had to compose music for the

robot to dance to. We knew we wanted to have the robot dance

to disco music, so we had to investigate disco rhythms and try
different, repetitive background melodies. Finally, it was during
this phase that we decided that we wanted the robot to move its
arm from its left hip toward the sky above his right side in a
typical disco dance move. We also decided that, due to material
limitations, we would only be able to make one dance move,
with arm and hip.
Development
First, we had to decide how
to make the arm move from
one side to another while
turning on the hip. We
decided that the motor
would have to be on the
lower part of the body and,
using a special gear that can
move its outer side while
stabilizing its inner side,
made a robot that could do
just that.
Deployment
 Wehave not arrived at this step. We
cannot write about it.

Robot that dances
 The HRP-4C is a humanoid Japanese robot
created by the National Institute of
Advanced Industrial Science and
Technology in Tokyo. It was publicly
presented on March 16, 2009. It is 158
cm (5 feet, 2 inches) tall and weighs 43
kg (95 pounds) including the battery.
It is capable of recognizing surrounding
sounds and, by using the vocal
synthesizer Vocaloid, can sing. Her
faces has 8 different motors that modify
its silicon face to be able to gesticulate
and show various emotions.

 In the most recent Digital Expo Content
2010, hosted by Japan, she danced and
sang using Kaori Mochina´s voice, who
is a famous Japanese pop singer.
History of Music
 The history of music extends throughout all
societies and periods of humanity. The
expression of emotions and ideas through
music directly affects culture, including
political and economic organization,
technological advances, the attitude of the
composer and his relationship with the public,
the ideas circling in each community, the
function of art in society and each composer’s
biography.
 The history of music is divided in several
periods, beginning around 5000 BC and
continuing until our era.

 Ancient world (5000 BC - 470)
 The ancient world includes ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia,
ancient Greece, ancient Rome and ancient China.
 The Middle Ages (470 – 1500)
 Religious music that is divided in two streams:
 Music from the primitive Catholic Church and Gregorian
chants
 Renaissance (1500 – 1600)
 Music from this period is divided in different schools,
which depended on the country of origin.
 Baroque (1600 – 1750)
 This style began as an attempt to simplify melodies, but
soon was dominated by ornamental and majestic
music. Many new forms of music, such as opera,
appeared.

 Classical Music (1750-1800)
 This style is characterized with a
transition from complicated Baroque
music to a more balanced
relationship between structure and
melody. Franz Joseph and Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart are two of its most
important composers.
 Romanticism (1800 – 1900)
 It began as an attempt to free itself
from Classical music´s restrictions by
flooding with emotion. It began with
Ludwig van Beethoven´s music.
 XX Century
 Jazz and it´s variations
 Music with African-American origins
that is characterized by extravagant
rhythms and a popular expansion in
the 20´s. Artists include Louis
Armstrong and George Gershwin.
 Rock (1960 – 1980)
 It derived from a variety of other
genres, especially blues, rhythm and
blues, and country, but also from
gospel, jazz and folk. This all gave a
musical structure that fast,
danceable and sticking.
History of Dance
The art of dance is closely related to the earliest civilizations when they
were formed, with its beginnings almost the same, and recognized as
one of the first arts. Dance movements are natural for all human beings,
although there are people who have better rhythm than others. We all
have a sense of bodily actions and this happens from time immemorial.
The earliest existing records of the history of dance are more than
10,000 years old, being ancient stone sculptures and carvings that show
the existence of dance rehearsals, and music. Is an expression as early
as the formation of the first tribal societies, where the dance was part of
the rituals for hunting and survival.
The history of dance and their beginnings are associated with the
Egyptians, where within several pyramids, drawings of different rituals
and actions related to dances and music can be found. Greeks and
Romans took some of the dances found in Egypt and adopted them as
part of festive rituals for gods with special emphasis Dionysus, god of
wine and drunkenness. Dance refined over the centuries and, in the
middle Ages, became more diverse and adopted new and different
aesthetic forms, movements and rhythms.
During the Renaissance, dances decreased in its diversity as many
were banned by the church which deemed them offensive; such was
the case of the "dance of death." This particular dance was intended to
remove the “Black plague” from the body via grotesque movements
and loud cries. Yet nowadays dances have regained its diversity as the
church became less powerful and less strict in their ways. One
example of grotesque dances nowadays are the ones used with the
musical genre called "Reggaeton". However this type of music and
dance is still looked down by connoisseurs of music as it lacks musical
instruments the grotesque movements it contains.
