Maritime Ship Collisions

• Ship collision is a kind of marine

accident that results from a ship
crashing into a still or floating object.
Ship collision cases can be a ship to
ship, ship to floating object etc.
• Collision can also be defined as the
change in structural properties of a
ship as a result of an impact with a
solid structure. Ship collision is
considered to be the worst of marine
accidents as it leads to extreme
adverse effects on human and marine
• The sea route traffic has increased
by leaps and bounds and there has
also been a sharp increase in the
speed levels. This has led to an
increase in the probability of ships
confronting collision. Also, higher
the velocity, greater the damage
caused to the ship.
• If the ship has high tonnage and is
heavely loaded, the effects of
collison can be more drastic in
nature.
Container Ships Collide
Near Kolkata Port
• KOLKATA / MAHISADAL : A cargo vessel bound for
Kolkata rammed into the belly of another
ship moving in the opposite direction
near Nurpur in South 24 - Parganas on
Tuesday morning .

• Hooghly point , which is the confluence of
the hooghly and the rupnarayan river.
Both were carrying non - hazardous cargos .

• Both container ships MV Tiger Spring and MV

Green Valley were damaged , but there was
no loss of life , said Kolkata Port Trust
( KoPT ) officials .

• The accident occurred around 11.45am,
when MV Tiger Spring was moving
southward down the Hooghly after
loading containers from KDS.

• Moreover, due to heavy deposits of slit
over the years , the western channel
of the hooghly has became unfit for
navigation-leaving just the eastern
channel open for ship movement.
• According to him, MV Tiger Spring
suffered some damage. The hull of
MV Green Valley was also
punctured. "Initially, some water
entered through this hole but this
was controlled. The ship has been
anchored close by till an inspection
is made," Sahay said.
• The pilot who was on board MV
Green Valley possibly manoeuvred
hundreds of ships along this
channel. It is common for ships to
pass 100-200 feet of each other
along this part of the Hooghly. Till
the inquiry is complete, it would not
be proper to comment on the
causes behind the accident," said a
senior official.
Ships collide, oil spills off
Mumbai coast
• Aug 8,A navigational error resulted in
the collision of two merchant
vessels due to which an oil spill has
been reported near Mumbai’s coast
on Saturday morning. No loss of life
was reported. The Indian Coast
Guard (ICG) rescued 33 sailors, but
due to the impact of the collision a
few containers filled with dry cargo
have fallen into the sea.
Effects of Ship Collision

• The after effects of a ship collision on

marine and human life are
immeasurable .
• Collision leads to detrimental
environmental effects. If the ship
involved in a collision is a tanker or
a chemical vessel then there are
high chances of the chemical or oil
leaking to the sea
• Financial loss to both, the ship owner
and the nearby local communities
• Ship collision renders substancial threat
to human life. There has been
accidents in past when the ship has
sanked within minutes, giving no
chance to the people on board to
escape.
• Collision with an offshore structure or a
port leads to infrastructure damage
and thus cause a heavy blow to
human efforts. There has been
collisions with bridges and port
What Causes Collision?

• Collision is a result of sheer human

error. Amateur maneuvering and
loose presence of mind of the
master, pilot or navigational officer
during the time of maneuvering, is
the root cause of any collision.
Apart from that, slack or fault in the
propulsion system, rudder or any
other machinery can lead to a
collision. Error or negligence by a
shore personnel assisting in
maneuvering activity can also be a
Dead blue Whale found at city
port (23-11-10)
• A 12-foot blue whale was found dead
in the waters outside chennai
harbour on Monday morning,
following which it was towed to the
harbour by the chennai port trust
workers.
• The whale was killed when it come
into contact with the rotating
blades of the propeller.
• Official are unsure about how to
dispose the carcass of the blue
• A crane brought by them to the pier
was unable to lift the carcass even
through it was capable of lifting 10
tonnes of dead weight.
• the whale seems to be weighing
about 20 tonnes and the body is
quite decomposed, said by port
trust officials.
• Officials debated on the best way to
dispose it of.
• Officials considering giving the whale as
a land burial at kasimedu, “sea burial
also an option, but it would invole
towing the whale out over 40 nautical
miles into deeper waters and sinking
it using weights. Since even lifting by
crane is a problem, a land burial
would be preffered”.
