INTRODUCTION
 Small, low profile components.

High efficiency of operation.

They have no wires or magnetic field.

Work like a motor that is mechanically coupled to
a generator
PIEZO ELECRICITY – THE CONCEPT

Coupling between materials mechanical and electrical
 behaviors.

Rochelle salt; lead titanate zirconate ceramics (eg; PZT-4, PZT-
5A, etc), barium titanate, and polyvinylide (a polymer film)

Electric polarization due to mechanical input is perceived as
piezoelectricity.

Working Principle
RECTIFICATION OF INADEQUACIES
Immature materials fabrication technology.
Mechanical reliability and Driving circuits.

Third mode vibrational excitation for reducing
the stress in the central nodal point.
Output and an input sections which each have
different polarization.
CONSTRUCTION

Process includes-print ceramic tape with metallic pattern-
align the stack-pressing-dicing.
The input section of the transformer has a multilayer
ceramic capacitor structure.
The output section of the transformer has no electrode
plates between the ceramic layers
The next construction step establishes the polarization
directions for the two halves of the transformer.
The voltage set up ratio is proportional to the ratio of the
output length and thickness of the input layers.

Piezoelectric element
Longitudinal mode piezoelectric element
Transverse mode piezoelectric element

ANALYSIS
 A PT is essentially an acoustic resonator/filter thatis designed such that
output voltage is different from input voltage
PTs like resonators can beclassified in their mode of vibration
 Direction of electric field is poled direction
 Voltage step up ratio of the transformer is proportional to the ratio of
thickness of the bar to the length
At-resonance equivalent circuit of rosen transformer
used to predict performace
Performance of rosen transformer

 Performace is stongly load dependent

 Power peaks at moderate load and efficiency at relatively low load
 Loss of efficiency is due to current through output capacitorfor both efficiency
and power transfer to be large inductor would need tobe placed in parallel to the
load
Advantages
Small in size
Dont require windings,so no sc possibility
Enables innovative circuit design
High efficiency
Wide performance range
High power capacity
Pure sine wave output
Disadvantages
PT is not necessarily the answer to all power problems
Applications
Used in thinner laptop computers and flatscreen TVs
Looking at develop step down applications for audio
amplification
High voltage power supplies for ring laser
gyroscope,Crtubes,image intensifiers etc
Separation of primary and secondary part for power
embedded sensers
Used in audio equipment,cellular phones,computer
data transmission ,computer power supplies,dc-dc
converters,lcd displays etc
Conclusion
Theoreticlly analysed PT and have predicted its
performance as a function of load
