HISTORY

On April 1, 1976, the Apple computer was born. Steven Wozniak, a


high school drop-out who worked for Hewlett-Packard, dabbled in
computer-design and created what would become the Apple I. His high
school buddy Steven Jobs, also a drop-out, worked for Atari and
convinced him that the two should form a company to market the new
computer, which eventually took off in 1977 with the Apple II. By 1980,
the Apple III was released and their company employed several
thousand workers.
1976 APPLE 1

• Based on the MOStek 6502 chip, the Apple I included


only the circuit board. A tape-interface was sold
separately, but you had to build the case. Initial cost:

1977 Apple 2

During 1977 MITS, which was in the process of being taken over by
Pertec, refused to license the 8080 BASIC to potential customers. On
20 April 1977 Gates & Allen sent a letter to MITS protesting their
lack of making "best efforts" to commercialize the program. MITS
responded by getting a judge to restrain Microsoft from disclosing
8080 BASIC code to any 3rd party and taking Microsoft to arbitration
to force them to abide by the contract. Microsoft's income begins
drying up that summer. They get bailed out in August by a $10,500
payment for the 6502 BASIC from Apple Computer for the Apple II.
 1980 APPLE 3

 The Apple III (often rendered as Apple ///) is a business-oriented


personal computer produced and released by Apple Computer and
was intended as the successor to the Apple II series, but largely
considered a failure in the market. Development work on the Apple
III started in late 1978 under the guidance of Dr. Wendell Sander.
 1983 LISA

The first personal computer to use a GUI (Graphical


User Interface). It contained a Motorola 68000
Processor running at 5 Mhz, 1 MB of RAM, two 5.25"
871k floppy drives, an external 5 MB hard drive, and
a built-in 12" 720 x 360 monochrome monitor. Initial

 2004 • iMac G5

The iMac G5 brought G5 muscle to Apple's consumer desktop line.


Housed in a completely new enclosure reminiscent of Apple's Cinema
Display line, the iMac G5 was a marvel of miniaturization. The case
was only two inches thick, yet housed a machine considerably faster
and more advanced than its G4-based predecessor.
In addition to a 64-bit G5 processor, the iMac G5 also included a much
faster memory bus, better graphics for the low-end model, twice the
hard drive space for the high-end model, and a new audio port which
doubled as an optical digital audio output. The iMac G5 was initially
available in three configurations: 17" LCD/1.6 Mhz/80 GB hard
drive/256 MB of RAM/Combo drive/$1299, 17" LCD/1.8 Mhz/80 GB
hard drive/256 MB of RAM/SuperDrive/$1499, and 20" LCD/1.8
Mhz/160 GB hard drive/256 MB of RAM/SuperDrive/$1899.
 IPAD 2010

 The iPad is a tablet computer designed and


developed by Apple. It is particularly marketed
as a platform for audio and visual media such
as books, periodicals, movies, music, and
games, as well as web content Apple released
the iPad in April 2010, and sold 3 million of the
devices in 80 days.

 Apple is a very successful company.

quarter profits to $320 (June 2005).

brands in the World, and has a very loyal set of
enthusiastic customers

and hardware.

    Apple Computers have good brand loyalty.


WEAKNESS
 It is reported that the Apple iPod Nano may have a faulty
screen.

 Early in 2005 Apple announced that it was to end its long-


standing relationship with IBM as a chip supplier, and that it
was about to switch to Intel.

 Some industry specialists commented that the swap could


confuse Apple's consumers High price. Apple’s products are
typically higher in price than its competitors.

 Apple has the opportunity to develop its iTunes and music
player technology into a mobile phone format.

Threats
 The biggest threat to IT companies such as Apple is the very high level
of competition in the technology markets.
 Increased competition on mobile products
 Some products becoming too ubiquitous

 Companies not seeing Apple as compatible with their


software.

-Apple facing strong competition from Dell, HP, Sony and Toshiba in laptop
segment.
 - Apple software, Cell phone and hardware are expensive as compared to
other competitors such as Dell.
-Microsoft launched Microsoft Vista, Windows 7 which is gaining market
share.
-The switching in technology is very fast.
