 HISTORY OF THE INTERNET

 Until 1990, Albania was one of the world's most isolated and controlled
countries.

 The Internet was introduced in Albania in 1991 by the Soros Foundation.

 The first providers was the Intellectual Communication Centre-Albania

which functions as an NGO.

 The second phase with Abissnet and Adanet being the first to use the Web
for commercial purposes.

 Third stage Internet services were provided by companies that had

previously operated as dealers of computers.

 ALBANIA IN FRONT OF THE WORLD OF THE
INTERNET

 Albania is ranked as the 42nd in Europe (and as 107th in the world) based in its
level of users and for the infrastructure of the internet service.

 In Albania as the other places the internet is still keen on but is still inaccessible
for all.

 We should say that in Albania almost doesn’t exist the e-commerce.

 Also the public service offered throw e-government system is in its first steps.

 THE USE OF THE INTERNET

 The major function of the Internet is providing access to knowledge.

 Emigration is a wound for the Albanian society.

 Among the most useful forms of the virtual space are the discussions taking
place at online forums and chat-rooms.

 THE USERS AND THE TRADE

 Till the end of the 1990 the internet in Albania was exclusively used by:

a. Government institution
b. International organization.
c. University institution
d. NGO

 The beginning of the liberalization of the telecommunication trade brought

up many competitors that is why we met an increase of the internet users.

 OPERATORS (ISP’s) IN ALBANIA

 Despite the technical and logistic problems Albanian company’s that offers
internet service has made a great progress.

 The government institution (ERT) has given license for about 32 ISP companies
that offers internet which are divided into national, regional, and local.

 The trade has operator with profiles of divided costumers.

 If we draw a map of the internet usage in Albania we would show the zone
of Tirana in red color and the other parts of Albania in faint color.

 AlbTelecom is the only company with a vast extension in all Albania and
that offers internet service in all the cities.

 THE TELEPHONY HISTORY

 The history of Albtelecom dates since 1912, when for the first time in our country was possible to
handle telegraphy-telephony services in an organized manner and with particular attention.

 Up to the year 1992, fix telecommunications services were offered under the General Directorate of
Posts and Telecommunications.

 Albania was poorly represented in the telecommunications field with an obsolete wire system.

 In 1999 this company was transformed into a joint-stock company, and since then the company is
called ALBTELECOM.

 October 1, 2007 - Albtelecom’s privatization process was completed and 76% shares of Albtelecom
was sold to CETEL a.s (Ankara), the member of “CALIK Holding” (Istanbul), Turkey.

 INDIVIDUAL LICENSES OF CATEGORY I:

 Albtelecom sh.a. – is the only operator for national telephony public services.

 Albanian Mobile Communications sh.a. – is the first operator that offers national
mobile telephony public services.

 Vodafone Albania sh.a. – is the second operator that offers national mobile telephony
public services.

 Eagle Mobile sh.a. is the third operator that offers national mobile telephony public
services.
