Definition
• A stereotype is a generalization about a group of
people of their belonging to their religion. When
we judge someone on the basis of our
perception of the group of which he or she
belongs, we are using the shortcut called
Stereotyping. It is a means of simplifying a
complex world and it permits us to maintain
consistency. It is less difficult to deal with an
unmanageable no. of stimuli if we use
stereotypes. But we should remember that
stereotypes are generally inaccurate.
Analysis
• The life of Nadia Aman, Mirza Baig,Yousuf Mohammed and
Nausheen Fatma and all the Muslims who live in United States
changed since Sept. 11 due to stereotyped behavior that the
public of United States followed about Muslims. Because of the
terrorists attack on Sept. 11 the life of Muslim Americans turned
from ordinary citizens into objects of suspicion and discrimination.
Not only the Muslims but their faith itself came under attack and
distrust. America saw an increase in the number of hate crimes
committed against people who were perceived to be Muslim. And
the number of anti-Muslim attacks in United States increased
following 9/11, increase in anti- Muslim hate crimes ranging from
discrimination and destruction of private property to violent threats
and assaults, some of which resulted in deaths.
Mirza Baig

• Mirza Baig served as a senior network engineer

for the office of the president.
• He was the only one embarrassed at the Texas
national airport even when he had a ticket
which was bought with a Govt. credit card by the
security officials for a full search, because of his
Muslim origin.
• This showed the stereotype behavior of the
people of US for the Muslims after 9/11.
Yousuf Mohammed
• He was an advocate of the US judiciary.
He wanted to offer his morning prayers at
the airport at 7.20 a.m. flight and he was
looking for a empty corner as the chapel at
the airport was closed. He realized that his
behavior would be misinterpreted and
asked the gate agent for permission which
he would have never done. He resented to
the fact that he had to give an explanation
for the public display of faith.
Nadia Aman
• In the case of Nadia Aman, who was a
project analyst in the US Commerce Dept.,
found it extremely difficult in making
people believe that she was Muslim alright
but not a terrorist. She became cautious of
what the people would say and if she
would be misunderstood.
Nausheen Fatma
• Nausheen worked as a special agent with
FBI.
• He was chatting with a senior manager
about the 9/11 tragedy when he was told
that all the Muslims should be sent back to
their origin. The statement hurt him a lot
and showed the stereotype mentality of
the US people.
Other Incidents
Most of the Muslims were discriminated,
been viewed as terrorists, ignorance
about the teaching of Islam and
stereotyping. On many occasions
Muslim women wore scarf who called
hijab were harassed, causing some
Muslin women to stay at home, while
others temporarily abandoned wearing
hijab. Many Muslim women
experienced unfair treatment because
of the way people perceive the Muslim
dress. Most of them were also fired
from their job because they ignored to
come to work without hijab, some
started wearing in a less traditional
manner. When some Muslim teenage
girls wear a hijab, they become instant
targets for other teenagers who are
bully by nature and all sorts of remarks
and insults were thrown in their way.
Since 9/11 and other terrorists
occurrence around the world most of
Muslim people have found themselves
to be target of abuse.
